As nurses why do you guys think that medications only treat the symptoms of a disease instead of curing the disease? Is it because no one has come up any cures yet? () Or do you guys think it's a conspiracy? I for... Read More

are you sure about that, katie?

i had a very good friend (an elderly, retired doctor) in the 80's, and we were having one of our many, philosophical discussions.

she swore on everything dear to her, that 'we'/america, had a cure for cancer, but 'we' make too much $$ in managing these folks with outrageously expensive treatments.
that, if cancer could be cured, we would stand to lose billions and billions of dollars.
her statement stayed with me, and i have always wondered if there was any merit in what she believed.

Well, we have a socialised health system, so I am thinking from that point of view, rather than fromt he slant of someone from a country that pays for healthcare. So I guess it depends, lol. I'm pretty sure if the UK had a cancer cure, the NHS would save billions of pounds to put back into patient care.

It's intresting to think about, no doubt!

A conspiracy against what? Common sense? What a bizarre premise.

If a drug company could cure something common...let us say diabetes with a one-off shot of some new wonder drug they would do so but charge a high price for it. New cases of diabetes would occur all the time so ongoing sales of a drug that does not cure but controls...insulin would be offset and insulin is relatively cheap.

Also bear in mind that some drugs are very expensive. Some of the newer chemotherapy agents for example. Now I work in the NHS which cannot always justify the cost and may refuse to use such drugs without a clear-cut clinical record. Does THAT benefit the drug company?

The whole notion of cures being concealed by the pharmaceutical industry is ludicrous. If they could make money from it why keep it secret?

Magic Johnson found a cure for HIV. It's called sleeping with loads and loads of money. Haha South park reference, i wonder if anyone here knows it.

My understanding is that most cancer is environmentally caused . . . radiation, chemicals, pollutants, etc . . . Even if a particular type of cancer could be cured, as in eliminating the environmental trigger, there are plenty of cancers that remain for the drug companies to make megabucks from.

How come my hospital spends so much time and money on trialling new drugs?

If we knew the cure for all the myriad and complex different forms cancer can take then we would certainly be using it

Well I'm grateful for everyone's opinion. Everyone that I work with seems to partially or fully agree with what I say and I work with nurses even though I'm not one myself yet. Maybe some of you guys are right but contrary to popular belief the government does'nt want the american people to know everything that goes on behind the doors of "BIG BUSINESS".

    Ignorance is Not Bliss.

And, for the poster who said he/she will like to read my paper I will gladly upload to the forum for everyone to see and make their own judgments.
I'm certainly not an apologist for the pharmaceutical industry and I agree that "Big Business" does not always have our best interests at heart. But, I doubt that the pharmaceutical industry is holding back lots of cures for diseases because in so many cases, modern medicine does not know the cause to start with.

OP, I have to ask, have you taken A&P or Micro yet? I would not write a paper about drug conspiracies until you understand how the body works and how drugs are made, to some extent. I didn't realize how complex it really was until I took Micro, and I worked at Humana for their pharmacy. I knew quite a bit about drugs. But that is nothing compared to what causes the need for the drugs. You'll even learn about drugs in Psychology.

I hope that you can write this and put scientific information or information from scholarly articles in it rather than just opinion. I'm assuming you're in English Comp, since you had posted something about English Comp a few days ago.

You need to be able to back up your paper with notable sources. Even in opinion papers, you need to back it up to some extent. You need to be able to prove why your opinion is valid. At least, that's what all of my comp teachers (and psych teachers) wanted and I always received notes on how well of a writer I was.

For example, I wrote a paper on abortion. I never once inserted my religious views into it or how I felt about babies dying. I never once stated "I feel." I stated, "I believe" and I would back it up as to why I believed that. Every reason I stated as far as to why it is not a good idea was backed up by facts from scholarly articles or reputable organizations. If you can do that, then go right ahead.

Your teacher is not going to like if you just spout of a bunch of opinion with nothing to back it up.

You also need to be able to respect and understand different opinions. Just stating "wow" and making comments as if others are not smart because they do not support your opinion will not get your far. You need to separate your feelings about the subject and just focus on the facts. This is not about how you feel about the topic, but rather the credible information that is leading you to your opinion.

I hope this helps you. I've just seen plenty of papers from people who didn't back anything up or just talked about their feelings about the topic and they end up looking like a fool. I don't want that to happen to you.

To answer your question, I don't really believe in the conspiracy. It really wasn't that far long ago that penicillin was invented. I mean, we have gotten to a point in medicine where we can do face transplants. I am amazed at that. Tackling disease is a whole different issue though because viruses and other microbes are complex things. They are quite amazing in what they do and how they can just change.

Is it possible? Sure. Anything is. Do I just trust and believe the government? Heck no.

Well if you don't know the CAUSE how do you find the CURE?

It needs years of cellular biology and an intimate knowledge of physiology to discern the cause of any disease. The two are inextricably linked.

I;'d like to read this paper too.

Thanks. Yes I am in English Comp. and I have to write a RESEARCH paper not an OPINION paper. I know the difference. Research is backed with facts and opinion is biased. I have taken A&P before when I was getting my ma degree so I have some knowledge in that. I'm not just talking out my a*s here. I plan to do actual research like talking to ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE drs' and such but I just wanted to know what the nurses on here thought about the situation.

Oh that is OK then. We all know Alternative Medicine has all the answers. Why I cured three cancer patients with Healing Crystals just last week.

Funny it hasn't overtaken conventional medicine yet?
