Need help on extension contract

I am a traveller who is about to finish my first 13 assignment. When I was asked by my fellow co-workers if I would consider extending for as many weeks as I could give them I told them yes.I had called my recruiter and at the time, approx 5 weeks ago, verbalized I could do 13 weeks. In the meantime a family member became quite ill. Having not signed the written extension contract (when it was sent by the company I am with)I thought I could decrease my extension weeks to 6 instead of the 13. I called my recruiter and told her the situation with my family and my wish to decrease my extension hours. She informed me it was already a binding contract for the 13 weeks.I told her she did not have the signed extension contract she sent me.Her response was that,"oh,but it was a verbal binding contract and it has been confirmed with Human Resources at the hospital."For the life of me, I never remember her telling me, when I signed with this company, that verbals were binding.I don't understand why I had to submit my first contract before I could start work for the first assignment and I don't need to send a contract, the one they sent me, in for the extension.Evidently,if I don't "honor" the verbal contract then I could be fined for cancellation fees, alldepending on what the review board determines.Has anyone out there ever run into this type of situation and if so, do you have any insite into this?I would very much appreciate it. Hi Maggie.

What a horrible situation! My gut instinct is to tell you that a verbal contract ain't worth the paper it ain't written on- especially if the company sent you a paper contract the first time. And it's not like you're deciding to go surfing instead- there are extenuating circumstances!!

I don't know what company you're with but go over your recruiters head. See what the management can do for you.

I don't remember seeing you on the Delphi forum for travel nurses- there are recruiters and very experienced travellers there who might have better advice. try posting a message at:

Good luck!

Hi,ratchit:Thanks sooooo very much for the great advice.I'll tell you, I just found out today that in order for the company to "hold" me to a "verbal" contract I must go to work that very first day of the "supposed"extension".That is the only time they will have me over a barrel!I can't wait to get into the delphi website. I just love this forum-such great subjects. Thanks again, ratchit, appriciate it much.MaggieD smile.gif
