Need advice on how to make resume for new grad RN.

I need help on how to make resume. I have no Idea on what should I put on my resume. The only worth mentioning is my past work is the military. Currently I'm volunteering as assistant CI. help! pls.!

Usually schools have a free resume service - have you checked the student services dept at the school you graduated from? They probably have nice templates and would help you create a nice one at no cost to you.

hmm my school doesnt offer that kind of service. Also i'm a foreign grad.

Use the SKILLS FORMAT rather than the jobs format. Also you do not need to only list work you did for money. volunteer and military experience is experience. Construct the resume to show the prospective employer what you can do to solve their job needs. They are not so much interested in how many jobs you have had in the past but what skills you have that will meet their needs. Consider what skills your prospective employer needs.

A) List 4 or 5 skill categories that you have and that they need. Example of skill types: Computer proficiency. IV therapy. Wound Care. Child/peds care. Community organizer.

B) Then list what you can do within that skill set and any accomplishments related to it.

C) Then list your work experience.

D) Lastly give short reference sentences from 3 to 5 key individuals who have complimented your work. State their name, title and year of pronouncement. You should have letters from these people to backup the reference.

Example:

WOUND CARE: Trained in wound vac techniques. Led performance improvement team in geriatric skin care. On team that trained faciity staff in new decubitus assessment levels. Wrote article for newsletter on how to asceptically measure wounds.

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY: Intermediate ability in MS Office programs including spreadsheet data. Designed website for local water board. Private tutor in rehab facility for residents learning to use email.

REFERENCES:

Sarah Turner RN, Nursing Instructor, April 2010: "Nancy learns quickly, shows great devotion to the patients assigned and is eager for stretch assignments to expand her skills."

You have experience in medical records. Documentation is an important skill in healthcare. Think about what you learned there and pull it out into SKILL FORMAT. Same is true of the dialysis tech experience. Both very valuable info if formatted so that the prospective employer can figure out what you can do. Same as assistant clinical instructor. WOW - teaching experience too! Your CNA experience may also provide foundation for you as Nurse experience if you can let the prospective employer know the kinds of tasks you gained skill in. For example some CNAs have med pass experience and some have rehab experience which makes their resume stand out.

Skip the Objective. Some use Profile - a short sentence of who you are professionally. Most prospective employers know your objective "get a good job".

Consider factoring out as skills:

EDUCATOR: (What did you do as assistant instructor? In what arena, type of care? How many students?)

MEDICAL RECORDS: (What skills did you practice? Any coding knowledge? Any record review knowledge?)

DIALYSIS: (Your prospective employer may not know what you did or the difference between a tech and a nurse's duties. My guess is there is some impressive information left unsaid here. Dialysis is a complex, high tech skill.)

Skill format:

1) Education/ License-Certificates - you are not required to put the date of graduation since it can become an age discrimination concern. Have a copy of the graduation diploma available if asked.

2) Skills

3) then Work experience (Jobs list) - you don't have to separate out volunteer experience from paid experience. You can place it under "work history - experience"

Be sure not to minimize your military service. I went into nursing after over eight years as a Marine Corps Infantryman. As I am sure you are aware of you did a multitude of training and held a vast range of responsibilities. Be sure to mention you know what it means to be part of a team...Supervised xyz troops and responsible for equipment and training of 4-13 men....Know how to be a follower and a leader....Military teaches you how to act in stressful situations with limited resouces...Conflict resolution....Leadership traits.....all of these show a potential employer you are dependable, responsible and able to work in a team environment and most likely are far more mature than that of your peers who have no military experience. Your breakdown looks pretty good on the resume. I like this pattern. It has always worked well for me.

  • Maintained GPA of 3.78 During RN Program.
