Yesterday was a busy day and I had two patients who took a lot of my time and I needed a lot of orders for both of them. A young doctor I didn't know well was covering for one of the docs, and after he listened to me describe each problem, ask for orders, and then put in the orders, he walked away down the hall and I called out "thank you!" because he had been very helpful to me. He turned around in the middle of the hall and called back (in front of a lot of other nurses) "No, thank YOU because I know that you nurses are the ones WHO DO ALL OF THE WORK. I come in for 5 minutes a day, but you are here all day. So thank YOU!"

We all applauded.

He's my new favorite doctor :)

Yes, that certainly was a nice thing for the young Doc to say! Hopefully the trend will continue! :up:

What a great story, and a great doc. I do know a couple just like him. They are real healers.

Hopefully he doesn't develop a god complex like most do. One of my Fav docs is an Irishman and last year I dislocated my thumb..... He did a nerve block coz I didn't want to be sedated then handed me a lollipop!!! He's finishing off his fellowship in EM

That was nice to hear. It is a nice reminder that we all need to remember to thank those around us.... Even for the smallest things they do, because it all matters. Everyone on the team matters.

The medical director of one of my facilities would come in with one of his residents. One day I was coming around the corner and heard him say to the resident " The best doctors know to listen to the nurses. If one of these nurses calls to tell you something isn't right with one of her patients, you'd better listen to her. They are here with these people at least 8 hours a day. Pay attention and be nice to the nurses." We could surely use more doctors like him!

I was working with this ED attending on a crazy busy night where we were all struggling to keep up with orders and trying to discharge pts to make room for more in the full waiting room. Well I had a few priority tasks to do and the doc wanted to get a pt there for constipation out to clear a bed, so he came up to me and asked where the fleets enemas were and said "I know how busy you are right now so I'm going to go give this guy a fleets and discharge him for you." I think I took a second to make sure I heard him right LOL, but then I saw him heading down the hall with fleets in one hand, discharge in the other, and couldn't help but smile.

I work with some great docs in our ICU and have had them thank us many times. And they always seem to have great timing in thanking me in front of the families just after I told them that we have great docs who really work with their nurses. Makes for a great work environment. I'm always afraid it will make me spoiled in expectations for future, different jobs.

Wow, that post brought tears to my eyes. Many of the Doctors I come in contact with are so mean and grouchy, it warms me to the core to think that some doctors actually appreciate nurses.

A bit off topic, I don't work in the ER...but people seriously come in for constipation? I did have a friend tell me she went to the ER because a mosquito bit her arm, and she was worried she might have west nile. I'll also add she had no symptoms of anything except itching at the bite site. lol

I work with some really awesome Doc's and PA's. They are so personable and nice. Rarely do they lash out. We have on PA that has the patience of a Saint and such wonderful humor. He is great to his pt's and to us. Love him to death.
