My Fight to Answer the Call of Nursing

My fight to become a nurse was not like many. One day I went to work in my old career as a Human Resource Generalist only to find out that my job was being outsourced! It was pitiful because it all happened on my 33rd birthday and it was right before Christmas. My hours had already been cut, I lost my vehicle to repossession, and I was dangling by the thread to keep a roof over my family's head. Our manager didn't even have the guts to let us all know. I cried for three days straight and did not get out of the bed until my husband came into the room to tell me that now was a great time to go to nursing school and start a new life in what I love doing the most...helping people.

My husband's words must've been a divine intervention because I sprang out of the bed to begin my search. The big issue here in my state is that the waiting list to get into nursing school is long...point blank! I ran up on a proprietary school in my area was offering a pilot program for LPN, II. I immediately applied and went by the school to start the process. Upfront, I already knew that this program was in the early stages of accreditation with our state.

Many told me that I was crazy to do sign up for this program, but I took it as an opportunity to pave the way for another person to change their lives into a career of giving. I had a normal run through like any admissions to a nursing school until there was a phone call from the head of admissions that things had changed since I attended this school. There was a time in my life where I was sick and I had to withdraw from this school's Network Engineering program three times. My case had to be appealed to the VP of the region in which he told me no. I told him that I was not taking no for an answer. I got the number to the CEO of this school!

Yes, you read this correctly, the CEO of the school to look at my case and allow me to attend this school. After numerous back and forth calls he decided to let me in.

Can you believe it?

While in nursing school we had a Director of Nursing who was pretty savvy in this whole accreditation thing and a president at the end of my first quarter there decided to leave. Our whole accreditation was in danger.

Since our school is a proprietary school so many in our region were against us becoming accredited and many were starting to wonder if they had made the right choice in coming to the school. I, on the other hand, had faith all along that it was all going to work out. A new DON and a new president came to the school and vigorously worked to get the whole accreditation thing turned around.

There were even close calls where we didn't know what was going to happen next, but more than half of us stuck around and finished the program with good grades. No one gave them to us. It was super tough and on top of that we had to deal with the community criticizing us for not being patient in waiting to go to another school of nursing. There were times when we had to drive over two hours to a clinical because of all of the bad press our school was getting from this whole ordeal.

Some of my classmates had a lot of things riding on becoming licensed and it worked out in their favor in the end. Not only did our school gain initial accreditation, we all got a stipend until we could take our boards, and it built our character and faith in the Lord!

Here I am now..... a graduate LPN and I am now attending one of the top schools in the United States working to obtain my BSN! It is indeed an honor to not only be accepted into the school, but to obtain a scholarship is a great honor! I feel that if I had never gone through that test of faith, I would never in a lifetime become the true nurse and academic I am today! I would never advise anyone to do what we did, but I am so glad that we did! Hallelujah!

Thanks! I really appreciate your encouragement! It was the hardest thing I've ever done! God bless and keep you as well!

It is very difficult to be the first class in any school, moreso when you need that all-important accreditation. You were true to yourself, and so very brave to keep up the front.

Congratulations on your accomplishments, and best wishes for a bright future!

I really appreciate your love! It was VERY hard and VERY stressful, but the best part of this life for every trial we go through it means that we are still ALIVE! This experience helped to grown me up! If anything was easy to get then we would not appreciate it!

as they say, everything in His perfect timing.

it really does seem as if divine intervention led you to where you are today.

sincerest congratulations on staying true to yourself, and not only overcoming, but conquering...

Thank you so much, Sweet! I appreciate the love! God bless you as well!

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I just recently received "the call" into nursing and I have accepted it with fear and trembling! I have three small children and I am going to begin my prerequisites for the nursing program this month! Your story is very uplifting as well as a boost of faith that God is faithful and will be with me too. :heartbeat

Hi Love! God, the Love of my family, and their support kept me going! I was just as fearful as you. It was the hardest thing I've ever done and still is because it takes every inch of me, but there is nothing like knowing that you are where God wants you to be. Sometimes we wonder why everything goes wrong only to find that they do this so that His perfect Will for our lives can fall together! Blessings to you and your family and keep the faith! :yeah:
