Menstrual Migraines

Hey everyone! Maybe I should have put this in OBGYN forum, but I thought more would see it here.

I was talking with my NP today, seems to me as I get older (37, EEK!) my migraines are getting worse and worse. I never linked them with my period until I was pregnant with our daughter. No period, no migraine the entire pregnancy. Had that 1st period postpartum and was leveled by a monster migraine. So, after I had her, I went on the pill. I could set my watch by my migraines and period. I always start on a friday, the day before I will get struck down by a migraine.

We talked about switching to the Mirena IUD, but I just don't know, need to read up on it first. I am currently managing migraines with Imitrex, but I only do that as a last resort. I am getting to the point with them that when they hit, they wake me up in the early am and I am a mess the entire day.

Any thoughts on the Mirena, think it will help?

Will the Mirena keep your estrogen levels from falling so low as to start a migraine? If so, it's worth a try. Migraines are hell, and imitrex makes me feel just "wrung out" and very tired.

You might also try "skipping periods" by taking the pill non-stop and having only a couple/few? periods a year. Lots of endometriosis patients do that and don't have any trouble.

I feel for you. I do not get migraines, but my wife gets menstural migraines. A she is trying to get through menopause the migraines still rear their ugly little heads.

She will have a migraine 3 days before the start of her period (or when it should start) and then 3 days into her period (or non-period). We were hoping that with the onset of menopase, they would stop, but so far, no luck.

Her cardiologist will not let her go HRT, so it looks like we are stuck with the migraines.

She will manage most of them with Mazalt, but occasionally needs Imitrex injection to get through it. And then she is wiped out for at least another day.

I hope yours gets better as time goes on.
