than there are SIMILARITIES between male nurses. To attempt to generalize in most cases would be like trying to say "I find black nurses to be so and so", not only would it be considered to be engaging in steriotyping but it would ALSO tend to be of little value.

I did not mean it to sound as a stereotype. I am just surrounded by females......we all have a different approach to our pt care. Just wondering if the male approach is different?

A couple of my best friends are nurses....one of them is male. We have worked at several places together....we seem to follow each other...haha

Anyway, he is a great nurse and gives the same compassion and professionalism that the 'girls do'. We work like 'twins' when working together...we just seem to know when the other needs help with something. He says we are like a hand and glove. Oh, we've been nose to nose in heated issues before, but like all friends, we realize we are first...human....and second, nurses. Our spouses are supportive and we are all great, close friends.

I've worked with other male nurses that were terrible.....just as I've worked with other female nurses who were good and some bad. To me, nurses are nurses and most of it depends on where your heart is. Nurses without 'heart'....and yes there are some....just don't seem to have that 'special touch', if you know what I mean. Not labeling anybody, just calling it the way I see it.

I think we need more men to join the ranks of nursing. There are alot of really great , compassionate guys out there and we need them:kiss

Being a nurse for 25 years and a man for 50, I love working with the "ladies". I would rather work with all women than men. I have found some men not up to the nursing rituals that is associated with the profession, but then most males only want to work in the high profile areas such as the ER. They want action and not such things as bed changing or tube feedings, etc. Now there are alot of males who love working M/S and they are great to have but face it, not that many want to do this type of nursing. I worked on a M/S floor for about one year and then I went to the OR for the past 24 years and would not do anything else. I work with one other male nurse for about 8 years and we do well with the patients. In 25 years I have not once been asked to leave a room because a female patient felt uncomfortable with me in the room. I feel I have alot of compassion for my patients and more times than I can count have held the hand of a patient going through some very rough times. I feel for my patients and can give them 110% of my skills to get them through a most difficult situation. I think all nurses sometimes fall into the area where alot of patients become only so-called numbers and this doesn't mean they don't care only that they have become sensitized to the profession, in other words only a name and not a person. I work ER, night shift, and often times I am the only female nurse working! LOL. We joke that you can almost smell the testosterone. I wouldn't trade ANY of our male nurses... Nurses are nurses, no matter what sex they are. Sure, they aren't able to do some tasks such as assist with the pelvic exams, but they pick up my slack such as the males who'd prefer to have a male come in and do their caths...

As for their compassion, yes, their compassion can sometimes outweigh a female's compassion. They may not want to admit it, but when it's needed, it comes out when it's called upon.

of course we can provide the same compassionate care as females. I am often told by my patients that i am the most careing kind and compassionate nurse they have had and i work with all females. Imagine that:)

Some of my favorite nurses are males (both here and in "real" life). Being a talented and caring nurse depends more on the character and personal talents of the person, rather than what sex they are.

I worked with mostly males in ICU for 3 years and I loved it! They were all wonderful nurses and gave wonderful care to each and everyone of their patients! I don't think I would have had it any other way. I really miss them......

In a long and varied nursing career I have came across some male nurses I didn't like to work with, and also some female nurses same thing. Gender has absolutely nothing to do with it IMHO. We were all nurses. Sisters and brothers, part of a big family. We got the job done.

I am proud to have a nurse for a brother. We both worked geriatrics for many years as aides and then became nurses, and he was so gentle with his elderly patients. They all loved him.
