LVN or ADN? Differential between ADN and BSN?

by SDLOVE

I'm looking into Nursing programs and can't decide weather to go for my ADN then do the step up to BSN or purse my LVN first then do the step up to BSN from there . I guess what I want to know is if the pay differential between ADN and BSN are significant.

Ay type of insight would be great

Some facilities give a 1/hr bonus for the BSN, otherwise for staff nurses, there is not a pay difference from what I have seen.

The most economical way to go, in general, is ADN to BSN. Especially if you're having to foot the bill to get your first degree. The big question is, how much of a waitlist is there in your area for the various programs.

Well said! Thaqt's how it is here in Louisiana too. My hubbie and I are both RN's, we are both ADNs. I went to LPN school first, as my mom put it, to make sure nursing was for me, and not "waste a lot of time if I didn't like it"...

But that was back in 1990 when the LPN program was only 13 months or so. Anyway, I did go to LPN school and finished in 1991 and worked on my prereqs to go on to the RN ADN program. I finished the ADN and had every intention to finish the BSN but just never went.

My hubbie, like I said, is also an ADN RN, and never went back either. He's been out of RN school since 1987, and after the first few years or so he has been a house nursing supervisor and a nurse manager over one of the specialty units. They always said that the ADNs around here would have to go back and finish the BSN program, but nothing else has been said.

But, as far as pay, ect, the RNs in our state get paid the same no matter if they are ADNs or BSNs. When you get tino the masters, when you complete it you do gvet more, but I have no desire to go for that. I do know that here if you want to teach, you have to have something higher than an ADN. I have NO desire to teach. If I'd wanted to teach, I would have gone into educatin when I was in college.

true sissie's mom.. you get paid according to years worked not education.. which seems weird but true.. i don't really care to me a RN is a RN and thats all that matters... we all take the same boards and we all are RN's..

It depends on the state your in i think.. in my state BSN's make 2 dollars more per hour than ADN's. I would check with some nurses in your state to see if there is a pay difference.

Thanks everyone, I was a bit confused hearing from various people that it mattered.
But I always thought that it shouldn't make a difference. So ADN program here I come.
I'm turning 21 and just want to finish school already! lsebeg:
