LTC and malpractice insurance

by Jennrog Platinum Member

I graduated as a LVN and passed the NCLEX about 3 years ago. I went back to finish my pre-reqs and I just got my first job. I work in LTC as a treatment nurse. I was wondering if I should carry personal malpractice insurance. I have been reading a couple of articles about being sued and it made me start thinking... For all of the LTC nurses out here in Allnurses.com land, how many of you have insurance?

All nurses (RNs and LPNs) must carry their own malpractice insurance. While hospitals carry a malpractice insurance, at the end of the day; it is you who are responsible for your own practice. Carrying a malpractice insurance is a personal risk management approach. I think CNA is the most common agency being used by nurses to purchase liability insurance coverage. Do not hesistate.

Definitely. You are wise to consider this.

I use, as do most here at allnurses.com, www.nso.com. You can get free online quotes.

I've carried malpractice insurance since it was required while I was in school. When I got sued, I was glad I had it. Like they say, better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

I just graduated in May, got hired and started work a couple of weeks ago, and bought coverage 2 days ago through NSO.

I have it and would not work without it. Nurses are starting to become real popular targets for lawyers these days..especially related to care in LTC facilities.
