LPN Returning to nursing

Hi Everyone,

I have had my LPN license since 1994. I only worked part time(weekends) for about a year at a assisted living facility.Then because of personal problems and other things, I ended up almost 11 years in the job that was suppose to be part time to pay for nursing school. School Bus driving.

I have kept my license current for all these years. Unfortunately I can not say the same with my education.

Can anyone point me in some areas to go to refresh, and also get a part time job. The school bus driving is old..but I have been doing it 11 years now. My daughter recently needed a home health nurse. The 1st nurse out thought that was something I could do.

I would really appreciate any ideas from anyone.

Glad you're returning to nursing - we need you! :)

May I suggest checking with a nursing school or hospital in your area to see if they are aware of local refresher courses?

In regards to the suggestion of home health care, home care nurses are often very experienced in other areas of nursing and have honed their critical thinking skills to allow them to work in the autonomous setting that home care is. You may want to consider starting somewhere that has more support people around, but home care nurses may be able to speak better to that.

Maybe you could contact the school where you received your LPN training and ask them if they have any suggestions of where you could go for a refresher course. Being out 11 years, if I were you I'd definately want to take a refresher course. I've been out almost 2 1/2 years and almost feel I need one and I've been a nurse since 1991...

Our local university has an RN refresher course that lasts 6 weeks and costs $1,000.00. Of course it's an RN course...

I think the local LPN schools and/or the local hospitals could help you out. Some places done have an actual "course" for you to take, they just put you with a preceptor to check of skills and have you take a few classes taught by the facility's employee education department.

Do look into it though because we sure do need you and I feel sure you are ready for a change by the way you speak in your post.
