I just got one today, and it came out amazing. Its a butterfly that fades from green to blue to purple with the lettering LVN 2007 under it. Just wondering if anyone else has gotten any tats to commemorate their nursing accomplishments.

not yet, sounds cool though.

I got a small heart in the middle of my upper back - a white heart is supposed to be the international symbol of nursing.

I just made an appointment for next wed. First tattoo, really excited, lol. It's a play off of the caduceus but instead of snakes i'm having dragons. Here's why: Many people think that the caduceus is that Staff of Hermes, which it is, and unrelated to healthcare. Well the caduceus is actually older than that, it's actually the Sumerian symbol for the God Enki who was the god of creation and closely resembles the double helix of DNA. (sorry to hijack the post with history).

My son is a medic in the Air Force, and he had a caduceus tattooed onto his calf. (Ouch!)

However, that wasn't good enough, so when he was home last, he went to his favorite tattoo parlor and had flames tattooed around it.

I have toyed with the idea but not found one that I like enough. I did see one really cool picture on the net of a caduceus used as the body of a butterfly. Kinda subtle but still medical. I have thought about getting a small heart on my wrist, where my watch can cover it when I need to.

I am still trying to find an idea. I have one picked out for some other meaning but at some point in the future I want one. I love tatoos. I have two so far.

This thread prompts me to ask a question that's been nagging me. I'm taking my pre-reqs and will be applying to nursing school ASAP. My tattoo (related to my Christian beliefs) is on my upper arm and "coverable", but I have two piercings that I dearly love that are way more obvious. The rook of my right ear is pierced (and I have short hair so it's very visible) and I have a small nose stud as well.

How huge of a problem are these going to be when I start applying for nursing school? The nose piercing would be easier to modify on a daily basis, but the rook piercing is kind of an all-or-nothing proposition. It would be basically impossible for me to remove and reinsert the ring myself on a daily basis.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Good God, no.

And the piercings will be a problem if one ever works with demented grabbers. Even dangling earrings are an isue.

Okay, back to the old fogies' forum now....

I don't have any, but I think it would be nice if I could find one I liked.

As for Penny's question, I think that the facial piercings will be a problem in clinical. It was against dress code at my school, and furthermore considered "highly unprofessional" by most of our nursing instructors. I would be reluctant to have facial piercings for my own safety, that would be a problem in just about every care area - geriatrics, med-surg, peds, psych. Just not a good idea, IMO.

Back on-topic - I hope some of you guys will post pics of your fancy tats! :)

I don't have any medical related tats yet, but I do have some ideas in the works. I'll probably wait until graduation and get one as a grad present for myself...I just got a new one a few months ago so that should hold be over for the next 16 months ;)

I'd also love to see pics of the ones you guys have had done!
