John's Hopkins News

  1. Anybody out there working at JH's willing to share a little bit about how working conditions are. I am seriously considering working there, but only have info from their website news. Any thoughts would be great, private emails also most welcome.

    Thanks much.

I've never worked there, but my sister's husband was forced to be a patient there several times and they were horrified by the care (or lack of care) they received there.

My sister made the comment to me that they are all puffed up with their prestigious name and research but sure don't bother to staff the floors with enough staff to adequately care for the patients. She rarely could get a nurse or ANYONE to attend to her husband....so she did it herself and called me a lot on the phone for support.

Just one story...but my sister was pretty vocal about her experience so thought I'd share.

I worked at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical center in the ICU. It wasn't that bad. It depends on which area you like to work and at what site, bayview or in dowtown.

I did a 13 week assignment there as a traveling RN. I literally counted the days until I was done!!! If God ever wants to punish me, he'll put me back there as an RN. The administration is very high on the rep of the med school, so nurses kinda get lost in the shufffle. They have residents to do EVERYTHING and nurses to be the waitresses. In the ICU where I worked, RNs were not permitted to give IV push meds, only the residents. These residents were some of the worst I've ever worked with, too, 'cause all they do is read research articles all day. When I would assess somebody or suggest something during rounds, it was NOT appreciated by the MDs. Many of the other travelers there were not comfortable or happy either, so I know it wasn't just me. I could go on but the bottome line is stay away!!!!! Bayview wasn't bad, though, whoever said about that.

My sister's experience was downtown if that helps any...sounds like Bayview has a better experience to offer a nurse.

Good luck to you and let us know what you decide!
