job "no longer available"??

My friend and I are supposed to start work at the same hospital in 2 weeks. Last week she got a call from HR saying they had to rescind her job offer because the position was "no longer available". How is this possible? They only hired her a few weeks ago and not much has changed in the economy since then.

She had already passed the hospital pharm exam and started the physical exam.

She hadn't taken the NCLEX yet, but is taking it this week.

It just seems really unfair and now I'm scared for my job too, since it's the same hospital (different dept).

This hospital doesn't do contracts, so I guess they have the right to take away the offer at any time.

It's scary.

may just be due to low census. It is hard for us to hire people we KNOW we will need in a month or two because the summer census is low.

Sometimes a hiring freeze will happen, and they're given a quota of new staff members that can be hired. Maybe you were hired earlier than she was.

Previous posters are correct. Hospitals all operate with a defined "Position Control" system that includes a specific number of positions that are approved for each department. The number of approved positions can change due to multiple factors' most often, changes in volume/census.

I would suggest that your friend follow up with the HR department. They will undoubtedly want to 'make nice' with her because there may be some liability associated with rescinding an offer at such a late date. She could effectively get on a 'waiting list' for preferential status whenever a new position opens up.
