Is it me or is hiring at Kaiser Permanente a joke?

Nurses Career Support Nursing Q/A

I interviewed a bit ago for a job that I thought may be a shoe in.

I was notified via manager that she wanted to hire me! But has to go through HR and check my references.

I was told I'd hear from HR in a day, they are desperate.

I NEVER got a call. I called the hiring manager who was MIFFED to say the least. She was very adamant that they should of called.

She asked me to follow up with HR for the rest of document.

I never heard from HR, it's been 5 days after interview. I called today and was asked

"were you directed to call me?" .. Yes.. ? I was.

I was told that they will get back to me regarding checking my reference and it can take..

READY?? 2-4 weeks.

Are you frigging kidding me? I laughed when the HR person told me that. I apologized, but I said, I am seeking employement at several locations.. I don't know how to proceed if this is the standard.

IS KAISER JUST A FLIPPING JOKE?

:jester: I feel like it is. How in the heck do you get hired?? No wonder they have the same jobs listed for months at a time online. Now , I know why. Nobody can get in.

No, Kaiser is not a joke. Actually, it's a great place to work.

The joke is HR. They work at their own slow pace, everywhere. I was a contractor for one year, management told them to hire me.... it took five ..very long months for the offer.

If you want the Kaiser job, do not laugh at HR. Don't even bother telling them you are seeking other employment, they don't care.

It will happen, in HR's own sweet time.

Kaiser is a great organization and wouldn't go anywhere else to work. But tho it's great place to work doesn't mean that every department is perfect. Kaiser HR is definitely giving this org a bad rap. I guess due to its huge human capital needs that even the HR department itself lacks the manpower to operate efficiently. Sad.

Honestly, I've encountered similar extremely unprofessional experiences with 90% of HR and recruiting contacts who I have dealt with in the past 10 months and as recently as last week... Where I live, healthcare agencies and hospitalsĀ seem to be outsourcing HR tasks or at least it appears to be this way... because everyone I've spoken to has been of Indian or Pakistani background and barely speaks english. It's been a difficult experience to say the least. Hope things start taking a more positive direction on your end (and for all job seekers right now)!

You got that one right it seems.

Seriously? I have been trying for almost a year to get my foot in there. I have had 3 interviews.. NOT ONE FREAKING FOLLOW UP.

THIS ONE.. really concerns me as the manager wants to hire me!! And HR is in LA LA LAND. I do not want to turn down possible job offers while i wait for these clowns to figure out which way is up..

this is NOT a good impression of the place I so desperately have been trying to get into.

I can guarantee, despite me really wanting to work there, I will have to accept another job because I don't think it's wise to "wait" for them.

Hi MsBlissful,

Don't give up! I currently work in the Kaiser Northern Region and I had to go through a lot just to start my job. Kaiser goes by the book. So, everything has to be approved through HR and your manager has very little say as to your hiring. I received a phone call from HR less than a week after my interview and it took HR 3 weeks to do my background check. I had some volunteer work that didn't have a whole lot of supporting documents. So, I had a long-winded email convo with the background check lady. Fortunately, everything worked out in the end. So, don't give up! Just be persistent! Hope you well in all of your career endeavors!

BAD NEWS.. I got an automated email tonight telling me the job I was sorta offered.. and it would take 2-4 weeks to process was GIVEN TO ANOTHER APPLICANT.

Wow - Sorry the job didn't work out.

Just as an FYI - It truly can take a couple of weeks for reference checks and background checks. Sometimes it is very hard to get returned calls on references and you have to try multiple times. Some places require a written reference request, and then they take their sweet time in responding. Sometimes the applicant does not give correct contact info for their references, so you have to chase that down.. For background checks, HR is at the mercy of the states/counties where you have lived over the past few years. Some of them respond promptly, and some of them can take weeks to respond. So delays for references and background checks may not be HR's fault.

WITH THAT BEING SAID - HR should be keeping both the applicant and the hiring manager informed of any delays in the process. I imagine that Kaiser has to deal with a very high volume of applicants and they may not have adequate HR staff to do these notifications. Just speculating..

I got an automated email like this for a job that I was offered. In my case, I had an official offer letter in writing. Seems when they send those automated emails out, they don't always remember to delete the email address of the person who actually got the job. In my case, it wasn't Kaiser that hired me, it was another large hospital. But what I'm saying is that I wouldn't assume the email is correct. If you're still interested in the job, call the hiring manager and HR to find out if the email was real or not -- it might not be.

Hmmmm let me tell you my story with Kaiser. I was interviewing with alot of different hospitals as a new grad. The interview with Kaiser felt really good....they finally called me. HR told me I got the position, started taking my RN license number and other information. In the middle of our phone call, I get an "uh oh" from the HR lady on the phone and her next statement was "I'm sorry, but you weren't hired after all. I made a mistake...you were only chosen as an alternate should the other candidates decline their position". Can you imagine how crushed I was???? Pretty much offered a job and taken away within 5 mins....so look on the bright side, at least they spared you that...LOL

Man, that sucks. I'd rather have the outright rejection than have to go through that heartbreak.

When i got my job last year, i interviewed....it went very well ( i interviewed with 4 and one of the managers showed up late and had to leave early. she was actually the one that hired me).

Anyway, i was told i would hear back in about 2 weeks since they had other interviews to do and i was one of the first.

2 weeks....

3 weeks....

4 weeks....

5 weeks...

i called HR. She sent me to the nurse recruiter to answer my questions. Nurse recruiter sent me back to HR. (ugh)

HR said they were unable to answer my questions and all questions need to be directed towards nurse recruiter (WHAT?)

....so i get back to nurse recruiter

"tell me your name again"

"_____ _________"

"Oh yes, i meant to call you. ______ would like to offer you the position"

HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN THIS LADY?!!? what do you mean you "meant to call me?" um...hello???

HR needs to get their crap together.
