is it appropriate to call?

Nurses General Nursing

I will be graduating this May and have submitted my online application and hand delivered my resume to the local hospital that I really want to work in after passing NCLEX. There is a current opening in the unit that I did my 12 week senior capstone clinical at, and after speaking to the unit manager on that unit she told me that my experience there is a bonus, especially since no other current applicants have prior experience in this area. I gave her my resume last Wednesday and I just checked the website and the opening is still listed. Is it appropriate to call her after a week to inquire about the position? This is my first time trying to get a RN position so I'm not sure if calling about my resume is appropriate or not. I want her to know how much I really want this job, but I don't want to seem pushy either...any advice for this soon-to-be grad would be appreciated!

Specializes in OB-Gyn/Primary Care/Ambulatory Leadership.

I would email instead.

Did you give your resume to the nurse manager, to HR, or to both? Did you also fill out the online application?

Yes, I submitted the online application. After finishing my clinical rotation my preceptor spoke to the unit manager about me and she was told to have me bring in my resume. I took my resume to the unit manager 6 days ago and sat down and spoke with her. She asked me when I was scheduled to sit for the NCLEX and made some notes on a piece of paper. HR got my online app. but not my resume...since the unit manager is the person that hires/interviews I was told (by my preceptor) to give my resume to her instead of HR. This is an OB unit and they usually don't like to hire new grads due to lack of experience...however, they did hire a new grad 2 years ago because there were no other candidates with experience (this new grad also did her senior clinical on the unit). So I am crossing my fingers that they will consider me because I have 12 weeks experience with their staff and computer system. I already have a username and login for their computers and Pyxis, and have been giving great feedback from my preceptor. I want this position so, so badly....should I just sit tight and wait to hear something, or is it best to call? I just don't know what to do :(

More than likely they are waiting for you to sit for the NCLEX. I don't really know of anyone who was hired prior to becoming licensed. But regions differ I suppose.

I just saw that you said to email her...that's a good idea :)

Yes, that is possible.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PACU.

I would email HR, since it is still listed they still "own" the opening. Where I work, we interview and ask to hire the person, but HR is the one to set up the official interviewing process.
