Interview on Friday 8/21

Hey everyone first off let me say i'm new to this site but i'm on here a lot! I'm a new grad and have passed my boards...it's really very exciting...I have applied at a lot of hospitals for several positions and had one interview in which i was not offered the job. I can say that rejection stung a bit and hurt my self-esteem for about a week...then i got back on the grind as far as job hunting goes...well I have an interview on friday august the 21 and would absolutely love working in this particular hospital and this particular unit...I just need some advice maybe some pointers or questions I can ask....it's a med/surg unit...how can i really sell myself to this nurse manager? Oh and the person that called me to setup the interview was the nurse recruiter and had initially set up an interview with her first and well I have a friend that works on this unit and so I gave her a ring and she called her manager and put in "a good word" for me, then the nurse recruiter sends me an email cancelling the interview with her and instead saying I'm going to be interviewing with the nurse manager...so I wonder if this is a good thing? Anyway thanks in advance for any advice and I will keep u all posted on the outcome...happy blogging

Congratulations and good luck!

Just be confident, dress appropriatelyand neatly--a suit or conservative dress--nothing flashy, smile and make eye contact. Give the NM another copy of your resume on nice paper. Let us know how you do.

Good luck! I think looking at the job sites info on "behavioral interviewing" might be useful. The basic idea is to find out how you handled something in the past as an indicator of how you will handle it in the future. Go over your nsg school experiences and previous work/life looking for concrete examples. I have been asked about dealing with difficult pts, conflict w coworkers, what I feel proud of, when I caught something small but important etc...

I'd also say that getting a direct interview with NM right off is a good sign. Yay!! Let us know what happens

Congratulations, I agree with MedSurgeMess, it sounds like a good sign. ImMrBill3 had a good suggestion as well. Something that I do when I am interviewing esp new grads is to ask about areas where they felt most confident in while in their clinicals. And also about areas of weakness. I look for those students that went out of their way to actually 'do' some of the skills that will be needed ie, inserting caths, injections, etc. Also, talk with your friend to see what the culture of the unit is...the manager will most likely try to find a good 'fit' for the position.

You may want to think of some of the questions from your first interview and practice saying the answers out loud so that you come across as confident in your answers.

Best of luck to you and please let us know. Don't let the first interview throw you off, after all, it was your first one and the economy isn't what it used to be!

Here is a good site with sample interview questions/answers that may be beneficial. If you go through that site they also have a big section on Behavioral Interviews that helped me alot!!! Good Luck.
