Interpretation of gestational ages

  1. I'm hoping someone can help me out here! I need to have some opinions on an interpretation for gestational ages....My dilemma comes with the interpretation of "< 32 weeks gestation". I'm getting a variety of interpretations/definitions and I would like to have a quick poll from nurses in other cities/countries on how you would interpret this.
If you wouldn't mind, along with your reply, could you give me your area of expertise in nursing as well as the city/country you are from!
    Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure just what is open to interpretation here. The phrase you have written means less than or equal to 32 weeks gestation. A baby born at this age would be 8 weeks shy of its due date, and premature.

I'm from the Chicago area, and have 11 years of OB and NICU experience.

    Hi Joli,
Thanks for the reply! There has been some question as to whether < 32 weeks includes infants up to 32 weeks, 6 days gestation. My interpretation is that < 32 weeks means less than or equal to 32 weeks, 0 days gestation. Anyhow, thanks again for the feedback!

Well, PitterPat, you are correct, less than or equal to 32 weeks is up to and including 32 weeks, 0 days. Once the fetus reaches 32 weeks and 1 day, it is now over 32 weeks (32w, 1 day).
I am from the west/southwestern USA, 14 yrs experience.
