INTERNSHIP??????

I got a random call today from a great hospital saying they were given my name. This is an 11 month internship, 6 months MED-SURG, 5 months in an area: cardiac, Maternal-Newborn, ICU-step down, or ER. I would get education in diabetics, wound care, and they will pay for all classes such as ACLS, PALS etc. This is for new RNs. It would require my family and I to move 200 miles away from our home. I feel like this is a great opportunity for Career Advancement. Right now I am working in Assisted Living 12 hour shifts MON, TUES, THURS, which is a great schedule to have every weekend off. I have a niche for the geriatric population, I love my job, but feel like there is no advancement. I love where I live. I am just curious as to what people's opinions are and what would you choose?

200 miles away, with a family. I would not do it. Keep looking for something in your area. God forbid if this job does not work out, then what ?

Depends on what you want and your family wants. But I agree that the better oportunity would be in an acute care facilty. 200 miles isn't so bad. If you own a home see if you can get a renter for a month to month or a year lease so that if it doesn't work out, go home.

If your family is on board, you should go for it. I find it amusing that nowadays people are so antsy about having to move for work. It has been done since time immortal. The kids will adjust - feed the family.

Just for clarification: the internship turns into a job at the end of 11 months? And you get to choose which specialty area you go into from those choices? Are you interested in any of the specialties listed? If not, then it wouldn't be a good opp. If yes, then it's the golden opp lol.

That sounds awesome! Never heard of anything like that before....really a personal decision, though. You said you love where you live. Could you love living there, too? And, you love the geriatric population, and your schedule now.

I'd be willing to bet the schedule will not be near as good as your current one. Make your pro/con list.

Also, that is an amazing opportunity, but if you are really happy and feel fulfilled where you are, then that's different. You mentioned advancement...you could become a geriatric NP or charge nurse, etc where you are, too. If you have no interest in working in acute care, but are only doing it b/c you think that's what you "should be doing," then it's not really a good fit. Not saying that's the case, but just make sure you make a good pros/cons list :).

That's exciting! And, your schedule at your other job is awesome, too! lol.

wait-- are you sure this call came from this hospital? had you previously applied there? how do they know you and how to call you?

if you don't have really good answers to this i'd do some serious checking first. i would look up their number in the phone book or online and call the hr department directly. ask about the person whose name you got when s/he called you. it might be completely on the up-and-up but i never heard of a great hospital calling random al nurses to come move 200 miles for a critical care internship/job.

and you may have found your niche in geri, but you don't have one for it. niche is from the french, a word for a little space in a wall-- statues live in niches in churches, for example. when someone has found their niche (pronounced neesh), it means they have found the perfect place where they belong. so if you have found your niche in geri, why would you want to change?
