Our 35 bed med/surg unit is adopting self scheduling and I'm looking for ideas and/or feedback from other nurses who have had or have experience with this. We have approx. 20 RNs on staff and we usually schedule 5 to 6 RNs per shift. How do other units self schedule? Are most staff members happy with this? We will rotate within groups for signing up for fairness and we have established ground rules to help make this a success. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Amy,

love self scheduling. I would actually never work anywhere that didn't have it. Soemtimes I end up working a night when I would have preferred a day, but it wll works out much better in the end. SOme units where I work have a problem because their RN's just write whatever they want, but where we work we look at how many are on, and how many we need before we sign up for a day. We have about 25 RN's for an ICU and my mgr leaves the schedule out, first come first serve. Enjoy!

AMY,WHERE I USED TO WORK WE DID SELF-SCHEDULING.THERE WAS A MONTH GRAPHIC WITH SPACES FOR EACH DAY AND ONLY 5-6 SLOTS OPEN PER SHIFT(12 HOUR)SO ONLY 5-6 NURSES COULD SIGN UP PER SHIFT.EVERYONE DID THERE SHIFT OF BEING ON CALL ALSO. EVERY THIRD WEEKEND YOUR INITIALS WERE PRESIGNED IN.FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.WORKED WELL.spitfire
