Question to all my nurses who work on floors with mixed shifts........

How does your floor ensure coverage for every shift and what types of hours do most nurses on your floor work (8,10,12, mix)?

In your opinion, what are the pros/cons of 8 hour shift vs 10 or 12 hour shifts?

Finally, have you heard about places where nurses schedule themselves but, are not registry? How does this work?

All posts welcome!

Right now I work 2 12's night shifts a week. It isn't bad but I do prefer 3 8 hour shifts. I feel that 12 hours shifts are long and draining. Ofcourse the pros are more days off, but I much prefer to do 8's. I even do 4 hour shifts to help out and love love love those!!!! They definitely add up.

I like the idea of 12's because of the extra days off. I'm wondering how they will affect me though. Right now, 8 hours seem to be getting to me because I could really use extra free time. I still don't understand how people make their own schedules though. Do people just agree to cover certain times always, or is it first come first serve type deal?
