I'm Lost and Lazy

Nurses General Nursing

I've applied to an upcoming BSN program (didn't know that this year) to unfortunately find out that I'm too late, and it's booked. My parent's got on my case for being a lazy bum, and I agree. It was my fault for applying late, and I'm fueling my inner fire to get on top of my application process this upcoming year.

The problem is that I'm lost on where to apply. I'm currently attending a local CC and I got most of my prereqs out of the way (As and Bs). I'm going to improve my GPA this last semester and apply once again to some nursing programs on time! The thing is, I feel like I'm shooting in the dark on where to go. My dad is willing to use his GI bill on my future, so I'm aiming at schools offering a large amount of $ to reduce tuition costs. I wish I had Yoda sitting on my back guiding my way to nursing school, but I have to be the pilot in charge.

One more thing; it's summer and I'm thinking about volunteering at a hospice to better my chances in getting into a nursing program. Does it matter if I volunteer at a hospital or hospice?

-Thank you!

are you looking for online programs, or do you plan to attend on campus?

i can't help you until i at least know this.

personally, i think you'd fare better if you worked at a hospital.

it would expose you to the applicable clinical elements you'll encounter in school.

finally, don't call yourself lazy.

you're the master procrastinator.:D

Actually, I tend to be the master procrastinator......lol!!!!

Definitely apply to as many schools in your area as you can afford to. With nursing programs getting more and more competitive to get into and the record high amount of applicants, a lot of qualified students get turned away every year.

As for volunteering...any medical setting is fantastic. As a volunteer, you'll probably be limited to doing the same things in both places anyway. Just make sure you keep an open mind, make a good impression, and do a little networking. With the job market as tough as it is now, having your name out there early is never a bad idea.

And one more little piece of advice to you...when you do eventually end up in nursing school, the "lazy bum" and "I wish I had Yoda" mindset has got to go! You absolutely cannot slack in nursing school, they will not be very forgiving if you don't do well in classes. You need to have a certain degree of intrinsic motivation to successfully get through nursing school, so don't depend on Yoda and make sure you bring your own A-game. Use your experience of missing the application deadline as a lesson in your nursing school journey...be mindful of deadlines and your responsibilities in the future. I wish you the best!

Well said NursePiggy, whereas for me I am just overwhelmed and scared because I take my TEAS test in 3 weeks; The reading and language part I'm not so worried about, it is the math and science portion that's killing me. I'm not terrible at math, it's just that when I look at those questions I tend to blank out and start hyperventilating(lol), It's so close (yikes).

Procrastination is one of the indicators of ADHD. You might want to do some reading of self help books on the subject or consider getting checked out by your doctor. If you have this condition, better to learn how to deal with it now, than to be wondering 20 years from now why you were unable to reach life goals. Best wishes.

Well the question is do you want to be a nurse?? Don't waste your Dad's GI money if this isn't something you don't want to do. The other thing you should consider is focusing on cc programs rather than BSN programs to keep costs low. This way if you remain on the fence at least you won't run up a huge bill while you figure out what you really want to do. jmho.
