which languages would make your job easier?

At the moment, I really wish I knew Farsi. Spanish is perpetually on my wish list but I could never keep the motivation to really learn it. What about you guys?

Also, how do you like your interpreter services?

I'm Puerto Rican (half) & speak more of a mexican influenced spanish (I'm in LA). So when talking to my PR family, that is hard for both of us. LOL but it really has helped me working at a major hospital in LA & no I wasn't raised speaking spanish either. I learned in high school LONG ago & it has stuck with me. I would love to learn Italian & Ukranian. Which are also my roots. I can also speak yet understand a little Vietnamese which helps at times. French has always sounded beautiful to me.

Who are you trying to convince? Me or yourself lol?

I'm pretty familiar with klone's posting history. She's trying to convince you.

If one *only* cares about business and money, nursing is an odd choice of a profession. You can make a decent living (and I think it's completely appropriate to consider that in a career choice) but it's not a business field primarily and there are careers that would make you more money.

Oh, and I'd want to instantly know Spanish. At least a third of our patients speak Spanish and that's probably a conservative estimate. The translator phones are a pain to use so we don't usually break them out for small talk type situations.

Finnish--we have a surprising amount of Fin speakers here

Specializes in LTC, CPR instructor, First aid instructor..

We have a high population of Russian and Japanese people in the building where I live, and I would love to learn both.

On a related note, has anyone had any luck using Rosetta Stone products for learning a language? Or a private tutor?

I used to use Rosetta Stone. It certainly has merit and can help with the foundations. My challenge, however, was that I needed to SPEAK more. I just couldn't take what I was learning and apply it very confidently. I experimented with a private tutor via Language Bird Private Spanish Lessons Online - Home . The experience was great! We would role play different scenarios together that I had encountered with patients and it really helped me develop confidence to actually speak Spanish with the patients and apply my knowledge.

I also found it helpful to study bit by bit during my free time in the hospital such as when walking from one wing to another. These little pieces of time add up!

I would like to be proficient at mind reading. My patients assume I am already an expert. It would come in handy and enhance my ability to care for my patients and function at my job.
