I was FIRED today!

I had my follow-up meeting this morning and I was fired. They wouldn't even recomennd me to another unit. I am banned from working in the hospital for two yrs. I honestly do not know what I did.

They didn't train me. Look at the post titled " I am an RN, but have no training! HELP!!" When I told them that, they said the RNs were afraid to let me take a team, that I had no confidence, and that I had to ask how to assess a pt for subdural hematoma.

I feel like such a failure. they told me that I could work in a nursing home, or a drs office but that there was no way I could work in the hospital. Christmas is coming, and I have no job.

Let this be a warning to you, if the position doesn't feel right and if they refuse to train you, GET THE HELL OUT!! I passed my boards on Oct. 3 and one week later I am unemployed. The nearest hospitals now are over an hour away.

Thanks for letting me vent!!

OK first check to see if you can get unemployment to tide you over until you can get regrouped.

Your hospital (ex) sounds like they're not living up to any sort of expectations. I would imagine most of us here have left a job under some kind of circumstance. I left one because I was afraid I'd go postal at all the stupid stuff that was happening there.

My place stopped hiring GNs when the NCLEX first started being computerized. You were a Nursing Tech until you got a license then you were an RN WITH a preceptor for up to 3 months.

I'd not take to heart anyone saying you couldn't ever work in a hospital. I put it off 4 years and the first year I wished I had quit just about every day.

Plus think about this all RNs do NOT work in hospitals.

Could you get with your former instructor and see what you need to reinforce your learning?

Good luck and you ARE an RN never forget that.

I know it doesn't feel like it now, but this could end up being the best thing that has happened to you - that place was just really odd anyway...........

you obviously absorbed something in your years of nursing school otherwise how would you have passed boards? you can legally sign "RN" after your name and that says something!!!

don't give up and don't forget that we're all here for advice and support - you were in a very bizarre situation and in your old thread, you had some of the most experienced nurses in this forum thinking the same thing so you are not alone!!!!

take care

You spotted the problem right off rfom your original post!!! YOU GO GIRL!!!!! This may be a blessing in disguise. You are NOT A FAILURE!!!! You are a hero who recognized the problems within this facility and notified someone, even if it was just us!!!

Having been there, done that and wallowed in the "gee, maybe they are right" mentality, I can promise you that you will, in your own time, come out of this SMARTER, STRONGER and have ZERO tolerance for being swepped under the rug by any facility.

They are legally contracted to provide you with orientation and ongoing support. Persue unemployment and take some per diem work in any health care setting you choose. You have those initials behind your name, you have this experience under your belt, your not some "deer caught in the headlights" newbie!!! You survived nursing school for Crickeys sake!!!!

You are one tough cookie who is going to forge ahead in this profession and be able to help others to take a stand and not be some doormat for administrators and dinosaurs who are shamed and intimidated by the one person who stood up and said "WHY???" You have them wondering and hopefully they will give the person who comes after you, though I doubt it, a bit more support instead of throwing them to the lions.

You rose to the top in my eyes and I am very, very proud of you. You can do and be whatever YOU choose. By the way, I wasn't expecting much from you this Christmas anyway, in fact I think I am going to go out of town and avoid the entire holiday! Wanna come with me? I hear Costa Rica is nice at that time of the year!!!

HEY! Maybe we can get a group discount...

Wow, I'm sorry. Like others have said, this is probably a blessing for you in the long run, even though right now it hurts. I'm a brand new nurse and if I didn't have a good preceptor who let me ask dozens of dumb questions, I'd be totally LOST. The problem was not with you!! Best wishes to you for a successful nursing career!

You had very mixed feeling about this facility to begin with. They did not follow thru with the training that you were supposed to be getting to begin with.

Take a few days for yourself, then start marketing yourself. You now have that title after you name which is worth quite alot in many places.

Ms. RN....... And never forget it.:)

...I feel for you AND agree with the other posters, this is a blessing in disguise. Is there LTC around? Try it, you will learn good assessment skills, become great at meds and interactions, take care of wounds, DM, renal and pulmonary patients. You will be able to see changes in mental status swiftly after you get to know the residents. You will be their advocate as you call doc for orders, prepare them for ER transfer. You will use your psych training !!

...I did this after a devastating first job with similar problems you posted. I now work acute care in a hospital and love it. But those 8 months in LTC were invaluable. Good luck and God bless.
