I was a patient on my own unit today....yikes.....

  1. Hi everyone,
Well....it has finally happened....I was a patient on my own med/surg unit this am....eek. I went to work lastnight....while I was driving...I started getting these sharp, sharp RLQ pains. Well..I didn't think a whole lot about it because with my endometriosis...I tend to get these pains from time to time. Anyways....I worked a couple hours...and the pain kept getting worse and worse..I couldn't sit in a chair or even walk after awhile. Somehow I managed to make it from 11pm to 5 am...and then the supervisor said...."enough, get your butt to the ER"...so i went down...had tests, got an IV, some pain meds,etc...and then the doc comes back and says "I think we need to admit you". I almost passed out....I was so udderly embarrassed...that I right away said "no". Who wants to show your butt to your dearest friends that you work with everyday...not me!!! Anyways....my sweet Dr. R. wouldn't hear of me going home....so..guess what.....I was off to my OWN med/surg unit. Well....I had noooo reason to be embarrassed....nurses, doc's, lab tech's...everyone...was totally on my side.....telling me they loved me, saying how sorry they were that I was sick, giving me morphine...(boy that stuff is goooood). They made me feel sooooo absolutely loved and cared for...it was wonderful. Then I got to thinking.....this is so much better than being admitted to a hospital where you know noone...my surgeon came in and said "hey , sweetie...how ya doing?" Everyone made sure that everything was being done for me.....it made a horrible situation...a great one.

Well...I'm home now.....I asked the surgeon if I could go home and he said "sure, anything you want"..LOL. Ohh...my diagnosis.... A RUPTURED OVARIAN CYST....man...I had no idea those things could hurt so bad....my doc's informed me that yes they can hurt that bad. Anyways....my point is that I will never be afraid to be taken care of by "my own"...they were sooooooooo good to me...I feel loved.... Ok..I better go rest..I've been up for way, way over 24 hours now...eeek...
    Luv ya all,

Wow, you must work in a great hospital. When I first began reading your post I agreed with you 100% when you stated "who wants to show your butt to people you work with." I probably would have tried to wear a disguise or something. I'm so glad you were treated so well. All patients should be treated like this. Good for you!!!

I have taken care of "our own" before on our unit. I always try to make things as comfortable and as discreet as i can for them. Usually employees are put in private rooms so that helps also. Is nice you had a good experience.

So glad you had a positive experience. That is my worst nightmare - to end spread out and naked on the trauma table - yikes - I'd have to find another job!

I was an OB nurse when I had my 2nd child. I delivered on the unit I worked on. I thought I would be sooooooo embarassed but they have seen too many butts than to remember what mine looked like!! LOL. My co-workers took great care of me and I just enjoyed being a mommy again.

I used to have nightmares about becoming a patient in my own hospital, but when it happened a few years ago, I had people falling all over each other taking care of me. And it was the same when I went in for my endometrial ablation last year......I was totally pampered. Now I'm actually looking forward to being an inpatient later this summer when I have my hysterectomy/panniculectomy.......if you've got to be in the hospital, you might as well be where "everybody knows your name"!

    Hi

Hope you are better now!! Sorry this had to happen to you.

I had the experience a few years back with both of my hip replacements!!
I was very pleased to be there because I had great care. Plus, I had lots of support & love from my co-workers!! I, too, had dreaded it at first. I certainly was pleasantly surprised!!

Just curious what showed on your tests prior to admitting that made them say they needed to keep you? I've had and seen cyts that burst and we don't get admitted here. Glad you're feeling better

Snoop -- Think you captured a lot of our own feelings with the "Who wants to show your butt to your dearest friends that you work with everyday...not me!!!" statement.

Glad to hear it's going well for ya.

Still... I'm not looking forward to the day. ;>)

    Z's playa,
I don't really know why they kept me to tell you the truth. Believe me, I tried to avoid it...big time!!!!!! I think the ER doctor was just concerned because I was soooooo painful when he touched my belly, my heart rate and blood pressure were way up too. My labs looked pretty good, the only thing that showed up was "a lot of fluid" in the cul-de-sac. (via ultrasound). Probably with my history of a previous hemmorhagic ovarian cyst, two surgeries for endometriosis, and PCOS...he wanted to make sure. Everyone there know's that I'm the kind of person that will actually try to ignore my pain...just hoping that it will go away...I think it scared him that I actually left work to come down and be seen....his comment was "you are used to a lot of pain, so this must be something big to bring you down here". Hope that helps...yes usually we send ruptured ovarian cysts home too...for the most part. I think the other reason was that the ultrasound chick wasn't available for three hours and he didn't want me to have to lay in the ER that long...(another employee perk) I guess. Hopes this helps. I'm feeling somewhat better today.....much better than the other night anyways....thanks to everyone for their well wishes...you guys ROCK!!!!
