I have a serious question

Nurses General Nursing

Why didn't you guys get your doctors degree?

I mean I see a lot of people on here complaining about the work load and stress and politics and what not. Oh yeah and the salary. I just don't really see why not, ya know? I mean a BSN program is 4 years. Medical is five. Like, lets look at the difference here.

4 year BSN grad ... making maybe what? 40-50-60-70 grand a year?

5 years down the road... they're probably still working as an RN, maybe they went into a specialty... topping of at 100k a year.

Now, a doctor after 5 years of medical school does residency, 50-60 a year... but then a couple years down the road they're making 200-300$ a year, and they're the DOCTOR. Thats some politics right there.

I don't know, maybe I'm talking out of my awss but, I'm just wondering what your personal reason is for not continuing your education. That sounds dick-ish... sorry :p

Ya I got you. The hours do suck, heh. But... you're a DOCTOR!

Damn though, If I could land a 70k a year job working 3 hours a week after 2 years of school I'd **** my self from excitement. What state are you from?

WOW, you're a doctor. But you still have no life. Begone, troll.

Specializes in Critical Care. CVICU. Adult and Peds PACU..

Also, nurses basically save doctors. We are the eyes and ears. We are the ones that call and say, hey, something's up with this patient... Let's get an ekg, cxr.... Ok?

I didn't want to be a doctor - simple.

Besides, docs get sued.

So do nurses and CNAs L:)

Let's give the OP the benefit of the doubt. He's a 21-year old who is looking for career guidance. In addition, he has been a loyal member of these forums for more than two years. A real troll would have joined sometime within the past few days to stir up trouble with problematic posts.

In addition, anyone who feels the OP is trollish has the right to ignore.

Med school comes after a bachelors degree- you don't get a bachelors in medicine. Then residency. Then internship which can be several years depending on the specialty. And, a lot of doctors work for hospitals- and are salaried. The days of being an MD being a sure thing to get "rich" are over.

Do YOU think nurses are in some way inferior? If nurses weren't around, doctors would have to have bunk beds in every room of his or her home to accommodate the patients WE take care of.

What is your real point? Your question is obviously not based on any sort of informed opinion..... There are also jobs that pay a lot more than MDs with less education. (didn't Bill Gates get his education in a garage??? :D)

I didn't want to take physics or organic chemistry (also the reason I didn't persue a degree in nutrition).

Very well, I do think they are in a way inferior but that's because of the way I was brought up. I hope I can get this out of my system soon, because like you said nurses are the wheels of the car. I was just wondering if it was okay to settle for being a nurse, if the opportunity to be a doctor was there for the taking. I read a lot of informative points in this thread and have realized that nursing is not inferior, just another arteriole of the artery.

I made a medical joke, oh my god :uhoh3::uhoh3::uhoh3::lol2::lol2::lol2:

Sorry this stirred up so much controversy!

It's hard for me to give you the benefit of the doubt that you're not intentionally trying to stir up trouble, but very well. However, if you feel that nursing is "settling" then please do everyone a favor and choose another career. I did not "settle" for nursing. I have a BS in Biochemistry, an AAS in Nursing, and am pursuing my MSN. I am a very valuable health professional. I'm personally tired of people asking "Why didn't you go to medical school?" My answer is I wanted to be a Nurse.

Specializes in Hospice.

lifestyle....doctors have crappy hours, and i don't envy their job. i get to leave my work at work .......they are responsible and hold the liability most likely if something goes wrong. same reason i don't want to be a np......

Specializes in ICU.

besides the years of schooling and the money... They are 2 very different professions. two different careers. Doctors aren't glorified nurses..... well, some may say so.

Nurses can also be held liable for not catching what an MD does that is within her scope of practice to deal with (drug doses, treatments, not doing vitals simply because they're not ordered, etc).

Specializes in Med-Surg.

There are a few reasons that I didn't pursue a doctor degree...

I didn't have that much passion to apply myself to the lengthy study,

I was too old when I started study.

I didn't have that much money to pay for the medical school education,

If I was younger, much younger, have the passion, time and money, I could have challenged myself to become a doctor.

I am happy to be a nurse.

If you are young, have no family responsibility, then go for it !!!
