I am scared!!!!!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have been reading all these threads about how bad med surg nursing is, and I am becoming overwhelmed with fear. I was a school nurse teacher with a BSN 30 years ago, and I switched careers and became a teacher. I retired, and I want to go back to nursing. Last spring I took a 6 week refresher course and although very rusty, I did well.

Seasoned nurses, please give me your advice. Would I be better off in a specialty area? I was thinking of psychiatry or neonatal. Those are two areas that I have an interest in.

Thanks for any advice you can give me. I don't want to be burnt out right away and then give up. I always wanted to be a nurse.

I loved changing to neo-natal after working years in med/surg. Most med/surg nurses I talk with about it are afraid of dealing with the small babies but if that doesn't bother you I would say go for it.

I'll have to confirm what you have heard about med/surg nursing. I know there are med/surg nurses out there that love what they do but I think a lot of people get stuck there. They get told they HAVE to have 1 or 2 years exp. in med-surg nursing to go anywhere else and they are doing that time or they are afraid to make a change (I was for years).
