After several years of increasing dissatisfaction with providing bedside nursing care, I finally made the decision to do something about it. I have been a RN for over 30 yrs and provide what I consider excellent bedside care. But with all the changes in health care, I felt myself being pulled away from the patients more and more. Computers, charting, phone calls etc. I realized that if I didn't do something, I would only put my health at risk. I have been interested in Parrish Nursing for sometime. When I first looked into the job, the pay is a big drop from hospital pay. But the more thought I put into it, I decided it was a chance I had to take. I went to a week long class on the Foundations of Faith Based Community Care. My eyes where opened. I took a blind leap of faith and decided that I need to quit my hospital job, even though I didn't have another job yet. I could feel a call, I felt like it was all going to be okay. The interview went well and I start my new job soon. Is this a path I would suggest to my children to take, quitting a job with out a new job, no. But I feel that I am at a point in my life that I can do this. I am already thinking ahead of the things I need to do. The churches and pastors are very supportive. I truly feel blessed at this point in my life.

I totally understand your thoughts and feelings. I made that leap of faith 15 years ago when I was called to be a Parish Nurse. For me it was a calling.

Parish Nursing is a great way to combine your nursing knowledge and skills with your desire to provide spiritual care in a unique way, to meet the needs of people in both the hospital and community setting. It is a job that can be very fulfilling. Although the pay is less than what you are currently making, your rewards are priceless as you find yourself being used by God in unimaginable and humbling ways.

You might want to take a look at the Parish Nursing forum for more insights into this nursing specialty.
