HRSA/ Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program

Nurses General Nursing

Hi Allnurses,

I've decided to apply for the HRSA Loan Repayment Program this year. I have been wanting to apply the last couple of years, but never got around to apply. Now that I am ready to apply I see that they have made alot of changes. I'm sure it is going to be much different from past recipients considering everything is submitted online and you cannot complete nor move on to the next phase until all of the documentation is submitted correctly.

Has anyone successfully submitted their online application yet?

Thanks in advance :)

I have been looking into the Hrsa also. I am a little confused about it. It says you must work at one of facilities for two years. Do you have an option for those facilities or are you just placed in one?

I am talking about the scholarship. Not the repayment.

kmac, You may be able search to see if the facility that you work for qualifies as a critical access hospital or facility, where most clients qualify for Medicaid or low income. Not sure, though.

Ok. So then basically you find your job locally? Is that how the repayment plan works?

My friend is in the army and she thought it was overseas and if it was in the us it was kind of like a traveling nurse.

The loan repayment is geared towards the US...you can research more on the HRSA website.

You can search with sites are HRSA approved for the loan.

So I was wondering if there are any loan repayment for individuals that are not US citizens/permanent residents? I know HRSA eligibility criteria is for nurses that are citizens or have a green card. I am in the process of getting my greencard and am not sure if I will be getting the card by the time I apply for HRSA. Any comments or suggestions? I literally am gonna have to take a bank loan because I don't even qualify for federal financial aid.

So let me see if I get this straight. You find a job first, and then apply for HRSA loan repayment, which may or may not be granted. And once you get the loan reimbursement you need to commit to stay for another 2 years? They don't count your past service towards the requirement? I already missed the deadline for this year, but let's say I find a job within the next month or 2 in a qualifying area. I would then have to wait another year to apply. Does this year count towards the 2 years? I'd hate to move my family somewhere for this benefit and then not get it.

^Yes. This program has made drastic changes for requiring facilities to be "critical access": pt population poverty level and MD shortage.

I am only aware that once you are approved for the loan, you are required to have a two year commitment a critical access hospital; if you decide to change jobs before the two years, it has to be at HRSA-approved site.

No. OP is inquiring about the scholarship.

They have a scholarship program that you can sign up for while pursuing your degree.

You basically sell yourself to their service for your first couple of years with the stipulation that within 6mo of graduation you will work for one of the approved facilities for a minimum of 2 years.

They have a separate post graduation loan repayment - and again i think you have a window of finding a job once accepted.

did anyone get it?

This is really old but I figured I'd revive it since I have a question and didn't see a more recent version for the loan repayment program...

I will call them on Tuesday but I have an interview tomorrow so if anybody knows, I'd love to know going into the interview.

1. For new grads, if we may not have started working by the application deadline but will definitely have started before repayment starts (as in, very end of February or beginning of March start date), are we eligible or do we have to wait for the next year's cycle?

2. For the debt-to-income ratio, is it our personal income or our household/family income? I'm assuming my spouse's income will be factored in but wanted to be sure.

If anybody knows, I'd appreciate it! If not, I'll call them Tuesday and try to post the answers so other applicants will know.

In case anybody else searches and finds this thread:

1. For new grads, you have to have begun the job by the end of the application date. A start date after the application period (even the next day) disqualifies you until the next year.

2. If you have a spouse, their income is included in your debt-to-income ratio if you reported it on FAFSA.

3. If your loan has a co-signer, it is ineligible, period. So if you had to have a co-signer for your loans because you didn't have an income because you were a student, your loans are ineligible for Nurse Corps Loan Repayment. Fun times.

Can someone PLEASE tell me how to search the website to see if my hospital is eligible!?! I cannot, for the live of me, figure it out.
