I have a custody issue that I'm dealing with so I'm unable to move our daughter out of the county. I know nursing jobs are hard to come by so i was thinking if I had to I would commute from Los angeles to san diego for work. I figure I only work 3 days a week so it can't be that bad....right?

For housing i would either rent a cheap hotel or look into area hostiles. It owuld only be short term...maybe a year until I can work out a better custody arrangment or get my one year of experiance and move closer to home.

I'm sorry for your situation :( I think that sounds like an awful lot of travel, if you can, try and stay closer to home...that would make for some long days. Best of luck!

Is being away from home 3 days (or nights) a week going to have a negative affect on your custody issues? I can see this possibly turning ugly and being used against you.

For 6 months now I drive 53 miles each way 5 days a week. I don't mind the drive, I work 3-11, so I never have to worry about traffic. I just hate having to get kids up and the gas, especially this past summer (I live in NC-it gets HOT here LOL) I have a part time job doing supervisory visits for a home health agency, so I spend a lot of time in the car. Eventually, I hope to get a job closer. There are 2 good hospitals 25-30 min,, but I have to get that magic one year experience to be considered (graduated May 2012).

I'm a new grad in San Diego and there really aren't any jobs down here. If something doesn't happen soon I was thinking about trying to find work in LA and commuting. I did interview for a great job that I really really want, so I'm hoping that it doesn't come to that.

Do you have something lined up down here?

No, the three days that I would try to work would be the three days that I don't have her that way the 4 days I do have her will be just her and me time. No work needed.

I interviewed with a psych hospital last week and am applying to a few more. I don't have my heart set on SD.. dont even like SD to be hones. I am willing to commute anywhere withing a 2 hour drive if I have to.

I wonder if most hospitals offer shuttle service from the train stations. I know 4 of the hospitals near me in los angeles have shuttles that pickup people the the train stations. If I could get that setup Ill commute 5 hours lol

I don't live in your area but I commute I think it's 76 miles a day and I love it. It's all highway for me since I live less than 2 miles from the ramp and its so soothing to get that break on the way home and my alone time in the morning. I work 5 days a week 8am to 5pm. I leave at 6:50am and get home at 5:50.

Something to think about. If you are unable to "float" the days you have her to accommodate your work schedule you very likely will have difficulty arranging your work schedule to accommodate your custody schedule. As a new person there will be limited flexibility and your custody issues will not be a priority of the manager. Their priority is staffing the unit. Also, if you are working night shift you must be able to get your needed rest so your time with your daughter is beneficial to the both of you. I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer I just want to make sure you"ve thought about this from all angles.

San Diego does not have extensive public transportation. I'm not sure if the hospitals would provide that. I highly doubt it, but it's definitely something to check into! This is a weird little big city. It is so spread out.

I have the same 2 hour radius :)
