This may just be my naivete or age showing but I saw a prn order from an old "breast man" that read verbatim "Ativan 1 mg p.o q 4-6hrs prn pain". Yuck :uhoh3: :angryfire... Read More

I've seen ativan ordered for agitation, anxiety, restlessness, but I've never seen ativan ordered for pain.

I can see it being an adjuvant to a pain med, but on it's own does it really work? Are they really relaxed and do patients experience less pain or are they just sedated?
If you did have pain you would forget about it!

I was prescribed Ativan when I had shingles several years ago on my face and scalp. It worked great on the headaches I got because of it.

state surveyers and pharmacy will not accept 1 or 2 nor 4 to 6 hrs...they require a specfic...it can be written as was suggested as separate orders for moderate or severe pain which allows a nursing judgement
many mds will give pain routine fist 24 hours and then on a prn basis...this usually works to the advanage of the paitient..

Is this for real? Utterly fascinating! My son and his wife are expecting my first grandchild in March so I forwarded the article to him! He will think I have totally lost it when he reads it! hahahaha!! The shock factor is what I am going for!

Ativan is a wonderful drug instead of Xanax or Valium for anxiety or along with other pain relieving meds.
My husband has a SCI and has a LOT of neurogenic pain that does not respond to Morphine or other opiate pain relievers or anti-inflammatory drugs.
He says Xanax helps his pain more than anything else. I would like for him to try Ativan and see if it is as effective.

This is a very interesting thread!

I've seen worse. Maybe it was because the patient was a pain.
