Sadly, my experience with burn is that the patients who stay the longest (past the 6 months - 1 year mark) are often the most difficult, non-compliant patients. Not all but many. :(

I work at a LTACH, the average patient stay is 30 days. I've had people on my unit stick around for 3-4 months. We get a lot of really complex cases, I've learned a lot working there, and its really nice getting to know the people you're caring for. All of the benefits of LTC but with crazy wounds and vents :)

I'm at a regional burn center so we see the worst of the worst, those are the ones that stay.

Stem cell transplant oncology. I have some general oncology patients who were in the hospital for months before I get them on my service (home health) too.

I work on a heart transplant floor at a research hospital. A lot of our patients stay 30 days or more pre and post transplant and they're all frequent fliers. We also do LVAD patient's and because were one of the few hospitals that deals with LVADs we see those patients quite often for years at a time. It can be very sad at times, but one of best feelings in the world is telling somebody they're getting a heart.

Thanks everyone. I am familiar with the frequent flyer business of oncology, my mother had leukemia and was in and out of oncology and the BMTU quite often and the nurses were very involved, even after her passing. I think I would have a genuine understanding of what it would be like to be to be on the family side of peds onc. That may be where I end up..or just oncology in general. It might take a few years because I don't think that the university hospital I want to work at hires new grads in peds onc...idk though. Are there jobs for new grads in oncology?

NICU/Peds Cardiac ICU. I've celebrated first birthdays in both...actually a second birthday in the cicu. Kids waiting for transplants and requiring mechanical support can hang around for months too while they wait.

Physical/neuro rehab. I worked as a CNA on a physical rehab floor when I was in nursing school and some of my favorite patients EVER were the patients I took care of on that floor. Helping someone with significantly impaired function from a CVA get back to close to baseline by the time he/she is discharged was pretty awesome. Good luck to you!

I was hired onto a bone marrow transplant unit as a new grad. It's been a great experience. BMT pts usually stay anywhere from 2-6 weeks on average and often come back as they experience complications whether it be immediately after the transplant for things like excessive n/v or way down the road for things like graft vs host. If you get into a hospital where they practice primary nursing you will really get the chance to build relationships with your pts. As a patient's primary nurse you will almost always take care of them if you are working and they are on your floor. You get to experience the high's and lows and get to know your patients... like build relationships but also see what they look like on a good day vs when they are not doing well. It's really rewarding and awesome to take care of pts over longer periods of time, but it is also very difficult when you have the more demanding or rude patients. We have a guy who keeps coming back and he treats us all like junk... screams at us, is noncompliant w/ most everything, we have to call security on him all the time.... I wish he would get cured of his disease REAL quick haha ;)

The heart failure/LVAD patient population are definitely people you get to know. Some will stay for a long time, and often those who go will come back to be diuresed or because of other complications, or if they're lucky, because they're getting a heart.
