Home correspondence course???

Nurses General Nursing

I was originally supposed to begin school July 8th, but had to turndown my spot due to financial problems. Can anyone tell me if taking a home correspondence course through the mail will benefit me any at all? It's through the Stratford Career Institute and it's for a "Nursing Assistant diploma". They make it sound really good, and the payment plan they offer is great, but I just don't understand how you could train to be a nurses assistant without hands on experience. If anyone knows anything about getting hired as a CNA, would anywhere hire someone who had taken an at home course like this? And how do I find out if I'd be able to take the CNA exam (or whatever it's called) after completing this course. What do you think? Good step? Or just a plain out bad idea and waste of my time and money? Thanks in advance for any info or advice!

-OH YEA, I HAVE CHECKED ON WORKING FOR THE LOCAL NURSING HOMES AND HOSPITALS (I KNOW THAT'S THE BEST ROUTE TO GO) TO TRAIN UNDER THEM, BUT THEY DON'T PAY NEARLY WHAT MY JOB DOES, AND I JUST CAN'T AFFORD TO QUIT MY JOB RIGHT NOW.

Nurse2b.. I would be concerned about whether program is accredited or not. Check with your state board of nursing website or call them up and they should be able to answer question if this course is accredited or not. I know what you mean as well about keeping job - I am still at my boring job and take course thru Red cross that is taught at nite and on weekends for 5 weeks. In Az have to have 120 hours of lecture/clinical time plus take State Board exam to be certified. Cost of class is $410 (out of my pocket) inlcudes uniform and books.

I agree with fulwood the course may not be accredited. You would be better off taking a part-time course through the closest accredited nursing school. Also consider taking classes that are onsite or online rather than distance education. Distance courses are convenient but they take more discipline and motivation than real or virtual courses. The interaction with face to face or online courses makes the class more interesting and is a less isolating experience.

Thanks alot you guys, you made some great points that I didn't consider. I'm going to see if I can find a site giving information about the state board of nursing right now- Thanks again!

I surfed the internet for hours trying to find names of schools and organizations that give training, but never went any sites about the state board of nursing. I typed in the search window and found a list of everywhere in Tennessee that offers CNA training! I thought there was nowhere near enough to me, but I was ultimately wrong, they're all around me! I just wanted to thank you two again for taking the time to bring it to my attention and for the helpful advice.
