That's when I'd be on the intercom paging him/her to wherever it was that I needed them.

Boy do I know what you mean! As soon as I got report we had to tube one of my patients. Needless to say the paralytic was at the other end of the unit. SO I said to the PCA (nurses aide) her name and she didn't look at me. I said it a second time and I could see her rolling her eyes. Then I was pissed. I said This is an emergency and I need you to do your job right now. She did but myself and a couple of colleagues brought it up with one of then managers and got the usual response-none. It is oh so tiring isn't it. I have threatened to get Lo-Jac car theft devices for some of them! Then they can't hide!!!!

We have the same problem with our Unit Clerk... I don't know WHAT she does, but it isn't done at her desk.... she's never there... :angryfire

I think our complaints to the manager have finally hit their mark, however. She said something to the effect that she was about to make a "career decision" for someone....

Don't you hate working with staff who won't pull their weight? Who hide or are always 'busy' and need you to answer their call bell.....again.....every shift? The aide who is always 'too busy doing _____' to potty a pt, even though you're OT and exhausted?

Sometimes I just go into a kinda autopilot trance at work....and try not to think about the above because it's been addressed over and over and NOTHING is done...so I just get myself all riled up for nuthin"...LOL!

The worst is when aides are allowed to be openly defiant to the nursing staff..and nothing is done about it. Talk about staff turnover...no nurses want to work that unit...when even our assistants treat us like sh*t.
