I'm a new ICU nurse and I have to have 8 trauma hours in a 2 year period (in addition to the 30 required to renew my license) I received 3 hours through work, but I'm on my own for the other 5... How do I know if the hours I'm getting are specifically Trauma hours and where can I go to get them? Any help is appreciated!!

My state doesn't require my CEUs be only in my specialty... are you talking about CEUs?

Are you a member of the ENA? they have lots of online emergency nursing courses free to members, which I would think qualify as trauma.

If you mean actually working traumas, have you asked about floating to the ER for a shift or two?

Perhaps you can ask whatever governing body that is specifically requiring you to have 8 trauma hours what they consider acceptable as counting towards trauma hours? I've never heard of needing specialty specific CEUs unless it was related to specialty certification renewal.

Taking TNCC would knock out 16 CEU hours in one swoop, but I'm not sure if you meant trauma CEU hours or actual hours working on traumas. If the latter is the case, I second JBudd's previous suggestions.

My employer requires me to complete 8 hours of trauma education each year. They help with this requirement by providing inservices once a month that are recorded and available on our education site. They also selected several CEs through a CE vendor that have been approved as meeting trauma education requirements. If this is a requirement from your employer, ask them for resources as they most likely require something that they've approved.

We use CE direct and they have trauma hours. Medscape may have some. We have a huge library available to us through work. Most online. We also have classes/workshops that fulfill that. As an ortho nurse I have to have 8 a year too. ACLS cert for the first time gives us 8, we have a trauma workshop twice a year. To keep my ortho cert, I have to find 70 hours of ortho in 4 years!
