HELP: Nursing Program Interview Questions (?)

by *guest*
Updated Jun 08, 2009 at 05:49 PM by *guest*

Hello All~

So I'm officially terrified! I applied @ Monroe College, here in NYC, & I PASSED my entrance exams!

I scored 138 on the PN NLN, and 88.2% on the TEAS. I came in 96th/99th percentile, for this program, respectively. So when retrieving my scores, the lady at the head of the Nursing Dept. subtly indicated I would be called in for an interview next week.

They are not really allowed to say that, but basically, I now know (or hope) I have that interview.

So what can I expect? How should I prepare? You don't understand.....
I want this SO bad and I don't want to mess this chance up. The reason being; this college admits you just based on your scores (being that you are in the top of all 300+ people that take the exams) and they only admit 30 people for this program. Once you are in, you are IN. No pre-reqs, etc. You're just STRAIGHT into Nursing.

Can some of you please help me? I'm going loopy here. I know they will ask me the general stuff:

Why do you want to be a Nurse?

Will you be working, etc. while in the program?

How do you respond to stress?

Can you tell me any "trick" questions that I might run into? I just cannot afford to mess this up. It is SO SO SO SO SO competitive to get into ANY Nursing Program...esp. here in NYC. Please, if you know
any other surprise questions I might get...clue me in.

Thanks a lot!

I think they mostly want to know that YOU REALLY WANT IT, and after that they want to know that you are going to stick with it, that you have the means to get to class, as in transportation, childcare etc. They want to know that you have a support system in place that will allow you time to study at home. NS is very demanding of your time and you have to devote yourself to it.... not only during school hours.
They don't want to give a spot to someone, and find out in 6 weeks that you couldn't find a babysitter, or that you have decided that you have to work more hours at your job to make ends meet and don't have time for homework.
So they are "scouting" you out so to speak, They know you have the smarts, but do you have everything else that is needed to play this sometimes seemingly endless game of Nursing School.....

BTW Congrats & Good Luck

Oh I can definitely convince them that I want it. I honestly really do. BADLY!!!

I'm just so nervous that something will come up. I just want to be able to be honest...without disqualifying myself or anything.

As far as I can say...I don't have any children, my college tuition can be paid in full due to my wonderful parents, partner, and his family just being there to support me financially if I need it.

I won't be working AT ALL while going to college. I have FINALLY saved up JUST a little bit to get me through the 11 months.

I live in NYC, so we use the subways...transportation is covered .

*phew* So I can't think of anything else. I really hope I don't say anything ridiculous!

It may really have more to do with the interviewer, and your rapport with him/her, than anything else.

Having said that, I was asked:

  • what are your best (and worst) qualities? Why? How are you working to change the worst qualities?
  • why did you choose this program? Did you apply to others? Were you accepted?
  • how would friends describe you? How does this compare with how you would describe yourself?
  • do you have any concerns about the program? What are they and why?
  • what is the most difficult thing you've ever done? Why?
  • what attracts you to nursing? What do you find unappealing about nursing?
  • How do you handle stress? Do you feel like you live a high-stress life?

It was an interesting experience, but a bit too much like being tacked to a board and examined. *chuckles.

Best of luck,

Southern

Sounds like you have all your ducks in a row, I don't think you will have any problems... Like I said they are looking for those that can go the distance. They won't want pass up a future nurse in order for someone who is just smart enough but will only be there for 6 weeks due to life situations.
