Can anyone tell me what they know about competency-based testing used by some hospitals to test critical-thinking skills as part of the initial employment process? I have been out of school less than a year, and have failed 2 critical-thinking tests. My job is now on the line. Management feels I might be a danger to patients because of these test results.Tests involve watching videos with patient scenarios then responding with interventions as a Nurse. Is there a way I can build my critical-thinking skills, or am I doomed for failure in this field? Any advice would be helpful....Darlene

I have never heard of testing "critical thinking skills". We test competencies for utilization of equipment and general knowledge of critical nursing policies and procedures. Critical thinking would be evaluated by direct observation and work outcomes. How DO you test of clinical thinking following graduation and passing boards?
