Got to give you credit

Nurses General Nursing

I have to give the nurses here, the utmost credit. The challenges of your profession (administration, doctors, patients, medical advances, just to name a few) have to be a significant barrier to overcome sometimes, in your goal to give the care you would like in a compassionate, professional manner that also helps patients help themselves.

I can't imagine anyone who isn't truly called to this profession, to be in it for very long. I can also understand those who can become calloused, based on what they see and experience everyday. For those discouraged, keep the faith. Your real value is beyond whatevery you might be paid.

This board has also given me insight as to the kind of patient I would want to be, if for no other reason than not wanting to find a desciption of myself up here. :chuckle. I'm having some surgery in November and will be a better patient for having been here.

Specializes in M/S, MICU, CVICU, SICU, ER, Trauma, NICU.

I must convey to you however--please do not try to be a perfect patient so you don't annoy the nurse. Be kind, and respectful. But if you need help, speak up.

We don't want you to get in trouble because you're trying to be nice. You're the reason we do our best.

This is so spot on Jo.

Thank you for your kind words Justapatient. By the way, you're not "Just a.." anything. You understand that we are not "Just nurses", and I understand that you are not "Just a patient".

Thanks for your kind words.

While I might mope, gripe, vent, and complain, I also realize that I would have no job if there were no patients. It is the patients who give us something to do, and for that very reason I appreciate them.

Thanks for the encouragement and wishes. It's a total colectomy I'm having in Nov, so it might be tougher than the hernia I had repaired a few years ago, but I'm still pretty young (50) and in decent health. I'll be around.

God bless you all!

To all who have been encouraging me. Thanks! My surgery has been changed from November to next week 10/14. I guess it will be 3-5 days in the hospital, 4-6 wks out of work. I'll keep in touch.

Thanks again,

Doug

Agreed with the above...our job is to make sure you are taken WELL taken care of. If you have a concern, or problem, let your nurse know. That's what they are there for!

Bless you. Taking care of folks like you make it possible to take care of the others who aren't so appreciative. Good luck with your surgery and recovery!
