GN license question....how long after graduation do you get it

  1. Just curious if anyone knows how long after graduation it normally takes to get a GN license. I know once I get that I can no longer work as an extern but my internship won't start until mid January so I'll basically be unemployed and will have no health insurance coverage (which I can't go without for any length of time). This has me kind of concerned. I need to hold off my GN for as long as possible so I can stay an extern up until right before the internship starts. Is that possible?

Depending on the state you may not get a GN, the turnover for the NCLEX is so relativly fast. In places were GN's are allowed, it when the school officially acknowladges graduation and generates a letter saying you've passed.

Where I'm at, my last final is on 12/5 and we graduate on 12/8, but the semester isn't officially over until the 21st, and that's when my SON sends the affidavit to the BON that I've completed my program - with the holidays and whatnot, I wouldn't expect to have my interim permit until sometime in January.

I'm sure it would just depend on when your school notifies the board that you've passed and how long it takes them to process your application.
