giving cash reward

  1. we had a patient that was diagnosed with abdl cancer and stayed in our unit for almost a month. he was discharged today, i was wheeling the pt to their car and the sister took my hand and tried to give some money. she said its for taking good care of his brother. i told her i cannot accept the money because we are there to take care of the patients and it is our job, and gave the money back to her and told her that if you want to thank the staff you can send a card i fyou want to. i want to know if in your hospital are you allowed or is it okey to accept cash as reward from the patients. is it unethical to accept cash reward from the patients. did i do the right thing telling her to just send a card if she wanted to?

It has always been unethical in all the facilities I have ever worked in. You did the exact thing that you should have!!

We are not allowed to accept money at ALL!!
We profusely thank them for their kind thought and tell them if they really feel they need to show their appreciation to send a card or whatever...but I always tell them that just hearing the words THANK YOU mean a lot more than money!!

If they really want to give money to someone, you can always suggest they make a contribution to a foundation that researches their loved one's disease/disorder.
