fun things to do on the burn unit

  1. 1. get everyone up for lunch and show the movie "Backdraft".
    2. throw dry ice under the pt's bed and watch as the fake smoke rises.
    3. tell the pt they used "Zebra hide" for the skin graft "but not to worry it won't show".
    4. paint "highly flammable material" on the pt's closet door.
    5. bring burnt toast into the room during a dressing change and ask the pt if they smell something funny?
    6. show the pt's your scrapbook of unsolved arsons around town.
    7. bring your kids in to show the pts their "cool science experiment" with sunlight, magnifying glass and dry leaves.
    8. bring your wood-burning set and do crafts with the pts.
    9. show the pts pictures of halloween masks as past successes of their plastic surgeon's work.
    10. in the evening on the weekend take everyone outside for a nice relaxing campfire and marshmellow roast.

Was this meant to be a joke?? Seems SICK to me, and not in the least bit funny.

Lighten up! I thought this was funny- although I don't think it willl make the Letterman show! Haven't any of you ever used humor to diminish stress? Sometimes we need to laugh- and it's not against the law!!

Well, yes, humor is one thing, but if I was a burn victim and a nurse said these things to me, it certainly wouldn't diminish MY stress. But that's just my opinion, I didn't think it was funny. But maybe I took it differently than it was meant.

I often use humor to overcome the stress of tragedy, but there are limits. I honestly didn't find anything funny about this post. A burn is not only a very painful tragedy, but it also leaves most patients with lifelong hurdles. Humor is wonderful, but absolute insensitivity is not desired.
