Flushing Iv Drugs Remaining In Giving Sets

  1. Is there any significant effect in the amount of drug delivered to the patient if the remaining meds in the line are not flushed. my colleagues always argued that a bag of adequate amount of approriate flush (eg NSS) shoud be attached to the line to avoid under-dosing and patient becoming resistant to the antibiotic. i have argued that any amount left in the line is very small (negligible) to effect under-dosing and resistance. i also believe that it can be discarded and the cannula can be flushed with 3 mls of appropriate flush. any thoughts about this? please can you supplement it with research/studies? thanks
