Nurses General Nursing

I graduated with my associate's degree in 2012 and earned my VA RN license a couple months later. I met my husband during pre-nursing. After I graduated, he has had to travel for work 2 out of 3 weeks, so I didn't seek employment right away. This year, I decided to try part-time and worked in a nursing home. The place was a disaster, so I left after several months. I have decided to work full time and would like to work in a hospital so I can open up my future nursing opportunities. I am concerned about my ability to get a job at a hospital. I did put in some applications before my nursing home job and just didn't get any interest. I don't have much experience, so I will need to apply as a new grad. I have been taking courses to prepare to enter a BSN program. I'm not feeling hopeful about my opportunities. I am age 50. Any thoughts on action steps/approach/encouragement? Thanks.

  • OK, not really.

I'm just trying to get your attention.

I graduated in 2012 with an ADN and earned my Virginia RN license shortly thereafter.

I have only worked 3 months as a nurse in a nursing home which was a disaster. (The nursing home, not me. They begged me to stay.) I didn't work more than that because my new husband works out of state 2 out of 3 weeks and we have kids at home.

I want a job at a hospital. It's taking forever. No one is responding. I'm 50. Is this hurting me? Is being out of work so long hurting me? I will need to apply as a new grad since my nursing home training was zip-zilch-squat.

I've been taking classes so I can enter a BSN program.

I would love your advice.

Are you in recovery? Is your license or probation?

Welcome to AN! The largest online nursing community!

Sometimes it takes members a while to answer posts...it is a large site and we have members from all over the world that work shift work.

Yes...being 50 is hurting you. No one will ever admit it but it is....you also have your ADN. In the current market there is a plethora of new nursing grads. Contrary to popular belief...there is no nursing shortage. Hospitals are ever increasing the requirement of BSN only for new grads. YOU are not a new grad. You have been out of school worked briefly and not practiced for over a year. You might look into a refresher course. Start your BSN. Look into LTACH facilities or home health.

((HUGS)) I am sorry you are experiencing this but the job market is tough for everyone.

Age, lack of experience, and not getting a job soon after graduating all hurt.

No, I'm not in recovery, nor on probation.

Thank you, Esme12. Perhaps I will try another long-term care facility. It's just that you don't get the same experience there as you can get in a hospital. And yes, I will be working toward my BSN. Nurse4ever08, I appreciate your candor. Do you have any helpful suggestions?

You are no longer a new grad because you have been licensed as an RN since 2012. In general, new grad programs hire candidates who have had their licensure for less than one year. You are well over that time limit.

Personally, I would look into home health companies, private duty, hospice houses, clinics, and other employers that have been known to give 'older' new grads a chance. I wish you the very best of luck.

THIS.

Cast the net beyond the hospital setting-nursing is everywhere!

Who calls it intercourse ?

Age is not a factor. It is not legal for a prospective employer to ask your age. Unless you are a decrepit 50, you should be fine on this.

Depending on your location, there may be a health system that hires inexperienced nurses. In my area, that is a large inner city system that is a very tough gig. But, many nurses put their year in and move on.

Home health and agency would be a way to get experience. Do not agree with pursuing another LTAC position , it's too easy to drown there .

So not true in some cases....no...they don't ask your name but it's readily available. MOST of my friends in my age bracket have had huge issues getting employment and that is WITH experience...I never thought it would make a difference ...but it does.

The only place I have found so far that doesn't require 1-2 years of hospital experience is nursing homes. ??
