Finding an internship

Nurses General Nursing

Hello, I have been a nurse for a little over 3 years and in rehabilitation. But I want to get into specialties like ER, labor and delivery, or NICU but I just cannot find a way to get into an internship or into the field I'm interested in. Any advise?

Most internships are reserved for new grad RNs in this day and age. If you have more than a year of paid licensed nursing experience, you are unlikely to be considered.

My advice is to apply for jobs in one of the less-coveted acute care specialties (e.g. ortho, med/surg, telemetry, cardiac stepdown, TCU, observation units, inpatient dialysis, BMT). Nurse managers in these specialty areas are often willing to hire/train nurses with rehab experience.

Once you obtain a year of experience in a less-coveted specialty, apply for an internal transfer to the ER, L&D, or NICU and see what happens.

Thank you for your advice.
