Fellow NURSES...Please offer your opinion on the best Nursing SHOES to buy.

I have gone through so many darn white, uncomfortable nursing shoes I could scream! I am enquiring upon my fellow comrades to offer advise and opinions regarding which shoes (brand, style, etc.)are the best buy. Which are more comfortable, longer lasting for the dollar, etc.

I have kept the padded insert and white shoe polish companies in business! I am thinking of buying some Dansko shoes...they are quite expensive but if they are worth it I won't be complaining ;).

Thanks so much!

I am totally ammazed at the shoes I am wearing. I have not had one iota of foot pain while wearing these shoes. They are Grasshoppers Stretch/Comfort Cushion. They look like something my Grandpa would wear and I found them on clearence at Shoe Carnival for $5.00. They have no laces, are plain, and have a leather upper with a thick strap that goes across the top of the foot and secures with Velcro to one side. (Great for adjusting when feet swell). I have just returned to hospital bedside nursing and was worried about my feet since I was having so much aching after working as a nurse liason, and wearing dressy flats/low heal shoes, and I wasn't even on my feet all day! Now I'm hopping in my Grasshoppers for 8 strait and my feet love it! Several years ago when I was also doing bedside nursing I wore Nike Air shoes which were fine but I did 12's then and did end up with shin splints.

Come to think of it, my shins have not bothered me at all with the Grasshoppers!Helpfull hints:

Don't buy shoes in the morning.

Don't buy shoes after work like I did or if your feet already hurt because any shoe that fits right, will feel great at that time, but may not be the right shoe later. You can be more objective with comfort if your feet don't already hurt.

Some nurses change thier shoes during the shift and they swear by it.

Cost doesn't equal comfort.

Good Luck :p

Several other discussion boards with similar topic and many nurses liked New Balance sneakers. I use them after recomendation by podiatrist and find no leg pain. Have bought several pairs.

You know, this is the third time I have heard, that changing your shoes during the shift helps! I'm going to try this! Thanks for the tips about shoes.. :D!

Personally I have went through several different styles and brands of nursing Nurse Mates I find very uncomfortable, I have found a great pair of the most comfortable shoes I have worn they are even more comfortable then my sneakers. I got them at K-Mart the are Cobbie Cuddlers white slip on soft clogs they are great, easy to clean and wear very well I only paid $19.00 for them and they are leather. If you have a K-Mart by you go try them out I bet you will love them.

Rockport ProWalkers!

I use them for about 6 month and then that pair becomes my casual shoe. They're usually about $65 but you can catch a sale for $45 or so. They're machine washable, standard shoelace style and I NEVER have aching feet.

Dansko clogs are the way to go, alternating with the New Balance tennis shoes. 10 hour shifts in the ER with the clogs, come home to run 4 miles in the New Balance tennis shoes. No back ache, no tired feet, no blisters! Love them both.

Get a good pair of Reebok Ultralights. I have been using them noe exclusively for over 2 years. They are the only shoes i will wear at work. They weigh just half of the weight of regular pair of air nikes. problem is they do not come in only white. Luckily where I work does not care what kind of shoe you wear as long as it is not a sandal....I could even wear work boots or loafers if i wanted (and this is a hospital) :D

My Dansko closed-heel clogs are very, very comfortable. I also like Rockers. Nursemates are terrible! Wear good socks too! My feet always used to hurt, despite good shoes, until someone told me to wear socks that were well padded...feet hurt no more! [Now my knees, that's a different story :)].
