At my hospital, we isolate ESBL but not E Coli in urine. Can anyone share the insight between these two? I thought ESBL is an enzyme produced by E Coli? Thanks for any response

Why wouldn't you isolate e-coli in the urine? What if they are incontinent? The sheets...ugh. Or have a urostomy?

You wouldn't isolate every single infection, but only the ones that are antibiotic-resistant -- like MRSA or VRE. Not all E. coli express ESBL.
