Does anyone have a good site/advice for breastfeeding?

I have decided to breastfeed my newborn. I dont know anyone friends, family, or peers that have breastfeed their child. I'm in the dark here. To make matters worse the hospital i went to didnt have a lactation consultant. I would like help finding places, websites, even personal experiences with people to help me with my process. I have been having some minor issues that i want answered because i cant stand to wait another two days before seeing my doctor. If you have any ideas please place it here or if you personally breastfeed and can help me, please feel free to email me.

kellymom.com has a ton of information and resources. My personal advice is stick with it because once you get the hang of it, it is so much easier than bottles. Good luck!

What kind of "minor issues" are you having. If you do a google search you'll find all kinds of info. I breastfed both of my girls for the first year. To me it was the most natural decision, but my Mom, Aunt, Grandmother all breastfed so I had great support!

One of my breast is larger than the other and is engored. I have tried to relieve the pain by pumping but nothing is coming out. I massage and place warm compressess to get the milk flow starting. The other breast is fine, milk is flowing well. Could there be something going on?

Yes you can have an infection that needs to be treated by a doctor. Make an appointment.

In the mean time,..as a Mom,.not a nurse. I would find a local group to help. I'm sure there are many in your area if you look.

Your baby is much better than a "pump" and I would let him/her help. If she is having trouble latching on let her try until she is frustrated then move to the other breast and let her nurse for awhile. Then try again. Nursing is all about getting into a routine. You and your baby will find what works. My first baby nursed on both sides at every feeding. With my second daughter she nursed on both sides until about 4 months then began nursing for about 45 min on one breast then would nurse on the other breast for the next feeding. You will figure out what works best for the two of you. It really is a perfect system and if you work with it not against it, you will figure it out.

Again,...see a doctor. I know nothing about you or your baby and for all you know I'm some factory worker who likes to live out my fantasies on line! :)

Waaaayyy off topic,.but you made me giggle. I'm a new IPhone owner,...my daughter is constantly reminding me "there's an app for that". She says "Mom,.it's not a phone, it's a lifestyle".

Rule #1: DEEP latching - Squeeze your breast above areola, bring baby's mouth to the breast ( not breast to the mouth), express some milk, then touch baby's lips with your nipple. When baby opens his/her mouth wide and baby's tong covers his/her lower jaw, right this second put baby's mouth on your nipple. Hold baby's neck, not head. Baby has to take areola in baby's mouth.

Rule #2: Baby has to suck with his/her mouth wide open. After baby latched you could put his chin down with your finger.

Rule #3: Feed baby one breast, burp the baby, and offer your other breast. Start next feeding from that breast.

Check for a local chapter in your area. A lot of them offer meetings you can go to where you can learn and ask questions.

Not only are the LLL meetings a great source of support, but a lot of times the leaders will come out to your house, free of charge, to help you with any problems.

If you go to their website, you can type in your zip code and the nearest meetings to you will pop up, as well as the contact information for the leaders. You can also look in your phone book; a lot of times LLL contact info is listed in the yellow pages.

I even used LLL while I was traveling abroad! They are such a wonderful resource. Just a bunch of women volunteering their time, dedicated to helping other women breast feed successfully.
