Does anyone else ever envy their patients? - page 2

Be honest--do you ever the patients you take care of, even just a little bit? It probably sounds wrong, but I often do envy the patients I take care of. Ultimately, they get to choose their... Read More

I don't think you envy them, exactly.

I think you envy their perceived lack of responsibility, maybe mixed in with the attention they receive.

Or (and I say this as gently as possible - bear in mind that I have atypical depression myself) you may have a degree of depression yet to be diagnosed or treated (or treated inadequately).
I would definitely agree with the lack of responsibility. They wake up, go to bed as they wish. If they want to stay in bed all day, they can because they have no job to go to. I generally can't get away with staying in bed all day because I have to go to work, and the only times I can do so are when I'm very sick. I work two jobs, they watch TV all day long, and get more sleep than I do.

You seem to think that being ill = being lazy. That sort of annoys me.

I'm someone with a medical condition that "allows" me to stay in bed all day if needed. The reality of that is that I can't see well, or my head aches so badly I can't move, or I can't swallow and I keep choking. It sucks. I can't imagine anyone wishing for that kind of life. You have no actual idea what it's like.

Maybe instead of wishing you were sick, you should make changes in your life that would enable you to work only one job and have more time to be lazy.

Nope. Never. I have my health. And that is my wealth.

My patients never got to pick when they slept. We made them wake up and eat (if they weren't npo- and some of them were- for weeks if not months), walk, and work with PT and OT. They had to be sitting in the chair by the time the doctors rounded. If they were perceived as sluggish their sheets got taken away and their bed not remade until they were allowed a brief afternoon nap. Keep in mind these were cancer patients that felt miserable. We also didn't cater to their every whim. They were encouraged to fetch their own snacks and such. They were like prisoners, without the hour of yard time a day or the ability to socialize with the other "prisoners" (too much infection risk). And this is how many of them spent the final months of their lives. So no, I wasn't envious.

I can sleep in and color on my four days off a week if I want. And eat what I want. Socialize. And go outside.

Ok, I think I'm going to step away from this thread.

My mom has stage IV breast cancer. She's been in the hospital all week.

    Yeah. Truly lucky is she.

Nearing the end of her life ...

I'm sorry, but please ... GROW UP. If you are that unhappy with life, as your posts always seem to me, do something about it. But lamenting about how envious you are? There are no words.

    I'm out.

Nope... Prefer my independence, even if it does come with some responsibility.

Op, I can't help to notice your posts have a theme of relying on/wanting to rely on others and helplessness. Eg. You lament the responsibility of working two jobs but in another post you reveal you do it by choice (for dating puposes even) though youd be happier pursuing another specialty of nursing, likely higher paying and likely full time. Just doesnt quite jive together, you know? If desiring dependence is how you really feel about your life, you may want to do some heavy reflection. Achieving life goals will be an uphill battle with that mindset.
