do you prefer day or night shift and why?

i prefer night shift. it just feels as though the staff work together better and that there are less cliques that during the day. also, it seems more laid back at night.

is it more difficult for a gn to get hired for night shift?
we've had gns hired both day and night...there definitely seems to be enough work to go around.

I like the pace on nights, but not the tendency to overeat (I have gained another 30 lbs since being on nights), the difficulty getting things done during the day, and the sleepiness. It's okay though.

NIGHTS! I hate getting up early in the morning, especially if its dark. Also on nights-no administration- CEO, CFO, and various other titles, policy makers, pts going to xray, surgery etc, the phone doesn't ring off the hook, and fewer visitors. There is room to chart at the nurses station, the charts are where they're supposed to be. Best of all shift diff. Its a pay-cut for me to work days.

In a previous occupation I worked rotating shifts, but mostly night shift. While attending nursing school, I worked night shift. I learned to like night shift primarily because there is so much less to deal with. Just not having the phones constantly ringing with the subsequent actions to be taken regarding the phone call, is enough of an advantage to me. Things are just more quiet and relaxed during the night. At least most of the time. There are times when it gets hectic, but not every shift. I always tell prospective employers that I am a night shift person, but will work the other shifts only if necessary.

It is my understanding, that new nurses many times get stuck with night shift at first because the majority of the staff prefers day shift so that they can be home with their family at night. I'm the opposite. I can still do things during the day if I make time for it and get my work shift done at night. I like it that way. But there are many disadvantages also. It is just a better arrangement for me.

we like night shift because there is not so much personal drama, we do our jobs and have a great night shift team. sleep is hard but you get use to it. so leave the daylight drama to the daylight drama queens

I think night because it might not be as busy and the place would be just a little bit more calm. Also, during the day things get really complicated and the hospital is busy and it's crazy!

nights. i'm a night person so i have more energy and the night crowd is usually younger and there are more childless single people on there..like me! plus they are usually less hectic.

Definitely nights. I'm a night person by nature. I work on a 42 bed post operative/orthopedic floor, so it's always busy, but less management and BS to deal with on my shift. The people on nights tend to be little more calm and laid back as well. On my unit, we are all about the same age and we are all very good friends, both at work and outside of work. We all look out for each other and I feel like I have much more support from my coworkers at night as a new grad than I did on days. I did days for a couple months when I first started at my hospital (nursing ed makes us all start on days and be competent before we can move to nights) and I was so absolutely miserable. It was too much to get up that early to be there (especially when I don't sleep well at night) and the other nurses and management on days are just WAY too uptight. Not to say that we are slackers on nights or anything, it's just a different attitude and approach. One that works much better for me. Pus I have always slept so much better during the day. One other bonus is that my boyfriend (also an RN) works nights so we are on the same schedule.

I work 3-11 and love it. It has been my preferred shift for all my staff and charge nurse jobs. I sleep until at least 11 am and if I worked day shift I would be in a coma for the first 4 hours of the shift. Diane RN 30 years

Dayshift. I work Mon-Friday, five 8-hour days in a row. I feel like I'm more in synch with the rest of the world, and my body definitely likes it better, I feel more rested and less sluggish. I worked nights for 13 years and the last couple of years did me in.

I only with the shift didn't start at 6:45, that's a bit early. LOL

[FONT=Franklin Gothic Medium]Days. I dislike nights with a red-hot flame of firey passion. Can't ever sleep, can't concentrate, and I feel sick to my stomach all of the time.

[FONT=Franklin Gothic Medium]Only SIX more shifts of nights and then I'm back on days. I can't wait!

I prefer the night shift because it works out better for my family. I have no trouble sleeping during the day and I still get to spend some time with my kids before I head back to work... Also, the less family around is nice too...
