DISTANCE LEARNING ANYONE???

I have just completed my education by way of distance learning. I successfully completed the program, but feel that it is not for everyone. My questions are:

1. Has anyone else obtained their degree by this means?

2. What are your opinions regarding distance learning?

3. Do you think that distance learning will eventually replace the classroom?

hi,

I think it is a great option fo people who live far from campus or who work odd hours. I live about 10,000 miles from my campus. Wouldn't be worth going there several times a week. I do my clinicals here with staff physicians. I have definately found classes on campus easier since there is more writing assignments and less student support and sharing of ideas. Although it is great to have the option. I don't think it will replace. If I had the option I would do the in class.

Hi ! I was an LPN and became an RN through Regents College distance Nursing program.I was quite pleased with the many benefits of doing it this way, as I was caring for an elderly person, working a FT job (that I simply couldn't quit), and raising 3 teenagers while studying.I do not; however, feel that it is for everybody-not in nursing.I had a broad base of experience, having worked as an LPN in 3 different states and varying areas-was IV and ACLS certified for yrs, etc.I feel that this experience was pertinent to my success in this program and would not reccomend a new graduate LPN or an LPN with limited experience to try it this way.For some, it is ideal(was for me), for others not.I was very thankful for the option and hope to maybe get a BSN degree in the same manner.

I am planning to get my BSN through Regents, so I'm happy to have input from someone who has gone that route. I have been an RN for 18 years, so I have lots of clinical experience. I don't think distance learning can replace the classroom, but it is a wonderful option for those of us who live in rural areas or who work full time and already have clinical experience. I will finish my BA before I start Regents. Maybe take a little bitty vacation somewhere in there.

As far as the academics are concerened Distance Ed programs are equal to classromm. You loose the student interaction though. And your correct in stating that it isn't for some people. It takes discipline, more than going going to class. It's much easier to procrastinate when in distance education programs.

As to replacing, well contrary to popular belief it is actually more expensive to run a distance ed program than a normal one.

Mustangsheba!! great job finishing your BA and then going for the BSN. Have you considered going straight into a distance program for your MSN? There are programs that allow MSN matriculation with an AS in nursing and BA in other fields. Just a thought. How have you been by the way???

best regards

Hey, Charles! Busy is how I've been; thanks for asking. I've been mulling a lot of options over in my tiny mind, however, I didn't think of doing a distance MSN. I need a minimum number of credits at my university to get my BA, so I will finish that probably by Christmas. Thank you for the suggestion. Why not? It probably wouldn't take much longer, right? Happy Father's day, by the way!
