Classroom Nursing Orientation

Hello all!

I am a newly licensed RN and I will be beginning my first career as a Staff Nurse in a Neuro ICU. New Hire and classroom Nursing Orientation are coming up this month! I have attended a hospital new hire orientation before but not from the RN's perspective. Guys, what can I expect during classroom Nursing orientation? New Hire is on a Monday, and nursing orientation is Tue-Fri.

a lot on policies and procedures, how to use hospital equipment (IV pumps, chest tube, hover mat etc).

i had a really "lovely" time, being the only nurse in the orientation group when i started....all of the speakers came and talked to me- alone- about whatever it was they were so thrilled to tell me it was horrible and it went on for 2 weeks. there was a lot of 'down time' since it was set up for a room full of people to ask questions. i just wanted to know where the p & p manuals were, thank you very much :)

i was actually happy to rejoin the group to go on some scavenger hunt all over the hospital (with some poor pregnant girl- really pregnant- and i told her if she dropped the kid on the hunt, we'd just have to grab it and go- we were not losing !!! (we won- candy bar prizes:uhoh3:...should have come with a free a1c...)

but, it does give you some time to get the vibe of the place- and if they try to make it fun (???) it's not lethal ! and you get paid to sit there.... look enthused. raise your hand once in a while (with questions, or if you have an answer). sit near the door (easy out for breaks !!). and.....

you will also be familiarized with the forms for your department, ie: MAR, consents, POS. This way you will feel more comfortable on the floor.

I use the Natl. Patient Safety Goals from JC as my outline for new nurse orientation. I have speakers from various disciplines come in to explain how their dept interacts with nursing. This breaks up monotony and learners get to ask the "experts" pertinent questions. Still boring to some degree. How long can a person sit and still listen attentively????
